'Tips from the Hip' emerged from childhood of belly dancing professionally on taverna stages beneath the temple of Athena at the free-thinking hip of my Saggitarius mom, Rhea of Greece.
As a kid, the tips received were the practical/philosophical life teachings from mom & gifts tourists in the audience bestowed on my tray of candles after a performance. I received Russian nesting dolls, carved wood perfume vials, even an 18K gold watch a Saudi prince took off his wrist to put on my 9-year old one! & more from generous people from around the globe....
Like any goddess worth her salt, I’ve crossed cultures & taken different names. Melinda is my birth name but Melina became my stage name as a kid, since George Pantelopoulos, the owner of the Athens by Night taverna would introduce me that way as I balanced that tray of lit candles on my head.
Both names contain Meli. Meli means honey in Greek.
