“Rick carried the banner of black pop over that fertile territory known as funk… he was bad, superbad, the baddest of the bad. His orchestrations were brilliant, his shows spectacular.” -David Ritz, Author of GLOW: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RICK JAMES

“With Rick, it was when he woke up he’d start working. There were many times where he would go until he couldn’t work anymore. During one session, we didn’t take a break for 36 hours. He would get a lot of work done.” -Rick Sanchez, engineer for STREET SONGS

“COME GET IT! was a triumphant debut, truly the sum of all that had gone before, at the same time as unleashing the rudiments of what would become not only his trademark sound, but also his mantra, his manifesto–his self proclaimed punk-funk.” -ALLMUSIC

“Throw Down” isn’t just catchy on accident. The song was a hit on the R&B charts in the late ‘70s, & it’s still a funk favorite today. The horns and guitar riffs on the track were carefully curated by Rick–a reminder of his impressive skills as a producer as well as a performer.

“Rick James offered an abundance of formulaic funk on THE FLAG… sociopolitical smoker ‘Silly Little Man’ (an angry commentary on the nuclear arms race and U.S./Soviet relations) and the new wave-ish ‘Painted Pictures,’ which describes the type of facades people show the world.” -ALLMUSIC

On this day in ‘86, Rick released THE FLAG on Gordy Records. The album shows off his signature funk sound, along with a bit of social commentary from Rick.
