Some quick facts about using oxygen (O2) in respiratory disease:
1) Oxygen is a form of treatment - it is prescribed according to the patient's requirements, at a specific flow rate and using a specific delivery method (concentrator, portable cylinder, nasal cannula, Venturi mask etc.)
2) Supplementary oxygen aims to bring blood O2 levels to normal or near-normal
3) Oxygen is not generally prescribed for breathlessness - it rarely helps on its own. For breathlessness, patients generally need to feel an adequate flow of air towards their airways. The flow provided by oxygen delivery devices is generally not enough to correct the sensation of being breathless. Other methods such as using electric fans blowing air, learning how to actively control breathing and certain medication can help alleviate breathlessness more than just oxygen.
4) Too much oxygen can be dangerous. Especially in patients who also have a tendency to retain carbon dioxide (CO2), prescribing too much oxygen can lead to a reduced rate of breathing which may increase CO2 levels in the blood and induce a coma. Caution must be used when dealing with advanced lung disease and oxygen should always be prescribed by a qualified health professional on a case-by-case basis
5) Using oxygen by those who actively smoke or using your supplementary oxygen next to an open flame while cooking is a fire hazard. Be careful!
6) It can be psychologically difficult for someone to accept that they need long term oxygen treatment for their lung disease. However, if you view O2 as a form of treatment it may help you benefit from this useful intervention. Talk to your doctor and express your concerns.

Can you eat after taking your inhaler? YES, there shouldn't be any interaction with food. Inhaled medication goes into the airways and the dose is extremely low (hardly being absorbed in the rest of the body), therefore the risk of any interactions with food is highly unlikely.
