Thanks for your well wishes everyone. We are fine. TC Alfred has weakened overnight to a tropical low pressure system and as it passes over us today, heading inland, we’ll see more wind and rain, but nothing too severe (for us at least). The bay islands, Gold Coast and northern New South Wales have born the brunt of it. 250,000 properties are without power and there is/will be flooding. Take care wherever you are x

Hi everyone, just a quick note to say thanks for your patience if you send me an email via the website or are waiting for me to respond to your questions under videos. I may take longer to respond than usual - we're about to experience Tropical Cyclone Alfred! ⛈️ It will cross the coast where I live in Brisbane in the next 24-48 hours. We have prepared as best as we can, but may be without power for some time after landfall, I'm not sure what the impact will be. I hope you are all safe and well, especially if you are also in south east Queensland or northern New South Wales. Take care! Elly x

I have had so many requests to write a book for soap makers over the years, eventually it became a message I could no longer ignore, or put off! My first book is a significant project (I'm not one to do things by halves, haha). It's going to take longer than I originally anticipated, but will be worth the wait.

It's funny that I saw this comment on my YouTube channel this morning. Today I am off to visit the biggest bookstore in my area to research who is publishing what! Rather than my original plan to self-publish, I've decided to pursue a traditional publishing deal in order to do my book justice. I want it to be the very best it can be so that it can be as helpful as possible to all of you! I remember one of my university lecturers (Sam Watson - Indigenous Literature Studies) saying to us once "if you're going to publish a book, go straight to the top!" Our teacher was himself published by Penguin Australia and was a great inspiration to me.

Wish me luck everyone. I think once I've found a publisher it will continue to progress beautifully! Thanks for being here with me for the long haul. My aim is to keep going with my videos as I enjoy this momentous task.

I had a fabulous day with these two yesterday, Keeley from Soy and Shea based in Caloundra, Qld, and George from Dawn Organics in Sydney. George was in Brisbane for a few days so we had the idea to take a little road trip up the coast to visit Keeley!

I had met Keeley before at her old shop in Cleveland, but had never met George in person before (after knowing him for years online and over the phone), and George and Keeley knew each other from online connections, but had not met in person either! It was one of those surreal experiences to see a human, in the flesh, who you've had a lot of contact with but never actually been in a room with before! George and I both reckoned we were better looking in real life 😄

So George and I had a nice drive up the coast, then spent some time checking out Keeley's amazing shop in the main street of Caloundra, then headed off for a very enjoyable pub lunch.

I learned that Keeley had a lot of expertise making lotions and other skincare products long before she became a soap maker. I bought some of her Face Cream and it's divine! Her soap range is pretty astounding too. I'd like to learn how to make my own creams and lotions one day.

Thanks George and Keeley for such a lovely day. It was so nice to hang out with other people who are as nerdy about soap making as I am (actually they are more so - they are pros!) and chat about YouTube life.

Hi everyone, I need your help if you can spare a minute? This is a bit complicated, so please bear with me. As many of you know, I'm currently writing a book for soap makers. I haven't said much about the content of it yet, but it has a BIG focus on formulating and calculating soap recipes, breaking down all those tricky concepts and giving the right information so that people can develop the skills they need to create their own soap recipes.

It's quite a job to write (it's looking like a baby text book at this stage 🫤) and one of my aims is to provide information on as many of the different fats and oils we use for soap making as I can, based on what people actually use and/or want to use in their location.

Many of you are in the USA, many are in the UK and Australia too, but I know that many of you are also reading from a great diversity of places around the world, and I want to hear from all of you. Back in 2020 I did a basic survey on my social media pages and YouTube soap channel of the oils and fats you all use for soap making. I still have that information (it's written up on a page under the 'soap' menu on my website, if you want to see it - it's pretty amazing to read), but I want to know, has anything changed for you? Are you using different oils and fats now? Or are things much the same? If you can let me know in the comments, so that I don't miss out anything in my book, I'd be forever grateful.

I'd also like to know, are there any oils or fats that you would like to use in your soap recipes that you can't find represented in soap calculators? If there are any gaps in our knowledge as a community, I want to try to fill them in. I'm all for us being individually unique soap crafters using the oils and fats that we have available to us, that appeal to us, that are affordable and sustainably sourced as possible.

Thanks for reading, and for your input if you can provide it.

Much gratitude,
Elly x
