It was the fall of 2022...

...and she looked right at me—head tilted, eyes locked in, like she had a secret she wasn’t quite ready to spill.

Just a quiet moment in the marsh with a female rusty blackbird.

Nothing fancy.

No perfect light.

Just me, my Nikon D500, and a bird with attitude.
Let me explain…

This image wasn’t about capturing the perfect pose.
It was about presence.

Connection.

That feeling of, ā€œDid you just see that?ā€ you get when something small stops you in your tracks.

Shot at 500mm with my 200–500mm f/5.6 lens.

ISO 720.

f/5.6.

1/1000 sec.

Simple settings.

Subtle moment.

Still one of my favorites.

Here’s the truth—depth isn’t always about grand landscapes or golden hour light.

Sometimes, it’s just a muddy patch, a quiet bird, and the way you see it.

Pro Tip: Don’t wait for perfection.

The scene’s not going to pause for better light or a textbook pose.

Grab your camera.

Be present.

Watch what unfolds.

Want to practice slowing down and seeing more deeply?

šŸ“ø Try this: Choose a quiet spot this week—anywhere.

Set your camera down.

Breathe.

And wait for something small and wild to surprise you.

P.S. Your best photo might not be the one with the most ā€œlikes.ā€

It’s the one that made you feel something when you clicked the shutter.

Start there.

For over 20 years, we’ve camped, hiked, and visited Letchworth State Park with our kids.

Every year, we promised ourselves we’d return to witness the full splendor of the park’s fall colors.

But, year after year, life got in the way… until a few years ago.

This photo captures the view just above the largest of the park’s three waterfalls, where mist filled the air.

The haze created a low-contrast image, and the fall colors weren’t quite at their peak.

Using my 'Base 07 | Semi-Peak' AI preset, I cut through the mist and set the foundation to paint on the vibrant fall colors I had envisioned, bringing the scene to life just as I imagined...

...without the need to come back days or weeks later!

Winding roads are just so inviting… aren’t they?

This edit turned out to be trickier than I thought. Ended up layering multiple AI presets, color brushes, and over a dozen masks to get it just right!

This photo was created from the same location as the last one… only this time, I’m right next to the waterfall, looking down into the canyon below.

Used pretty much the same editing tools as before, but since the sky was visible this time… I brought in my Sky Dark Blue brush to give it a little extra pop.

Sometimes, it’s those small touches that make all the difference!

If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be setting my alarm 90 minutes before sunrise to capture scenes like this… and actually loving it… I’d have thought you were crazy.

But here we are, and this photo made it into my top five favorites of all time.

There’s just something about the layers in this image… from the foreground I was standing on, all the way back to the end of the valley… that pulls you right in.

The Genesee River sweeps you from left to right, perfectly following that diagonal line up the butte.

And those blue hour colors in the sky?

Absolutely stunning, don’t you think?

Once again, Mother Nature wasn’t quite ready to show off those fall colors I was hoping for.

This cliff was a solid 5-mile hike from the parking area, but trust me, the trek was worth it.

Even though the colors weren’t at their peak, I knew Lightroom Classic could help me bring my creative vision to life.
I started with the 'Base | Green 09' AI preset to lay the groundwork.

Then, with a few strokes of Red Apple, Golden Leaves, Pumpkin Orange, and Autumn Red, I transformed all that green into vibrant fall colors…

...which meant I didn’t have to hike back again next week! šŸ˜‰

During its fall migration from Ontario, Canada, across the Great Lakes, I captured this Ruby-throated Hummingbird on its journey to warmer climates.

The biggest challenge was...

...the fall colors hadn’t arrived yet, and I had slightly underexposed the shot to preserve the detail in its feathers.

I first enhanced the hummingbird's brightness using the 'Subject Brighter 02' AI preset to bring it back to life.

Then, I laid the foundation for the green to fall transformation with my 'Fall Base | Green 10' AI preset.

I finished the transformation with my Burnt Umber color brush preset, transforming the green background into rich autumn hues, creating the perfect seasonal setting for this stunning creature.

Have you ever missed a photo moment?
Or worse a once-in-a-lifetime moment (sunrise/sunset, wildlife, expressions, etc.).

Out and ā€˜bout at our local marsh, hoping to spot some fall migratory birds… and came across this fella!

No peak fall colors to be found, but… I’m pretty happy with the transformation.

What do you think?

Timing Mother Nature for peak fall colors isn’t easy. Fall AI presets to the rescue…
