Woke up this morning to find Loaf, our Buff Brahma, had died :( she was just a bit over a year old. This is the second hen we've lost at the homestead, after Gucci last year, who was also young. I buried her in our compost pile, which is quite active so she can return to the garden where she loved to forage from. - Kevin

It's a terrible, sad day here at the Epic Homestead...we lost Gucci, our Gold-Laced Wyandotte today 😔
She was running around, snacking on treats, and enjoying life just yesterday, but today when collecting eggs, I noticed she was "dust bathing" in the hen house, which I found strange.
Upon calling her name and giving her a little pet, I realized she wasn't bathing at all...she had died.
Gucci was always the loudest hen when laying, with an egg song that could get a little crazy at times. This makes me think she was likely egg bound, despite showing no symptoms of it up until yesterday afternoon, when I last checked on the flock.
Typically, you'd notice panting, no interest in moving or eating, and even limp legs as the egg(s) press against their nerves. Gucci exhibited none of those symptoms.
Another possibility is a heart attack or disease, but she shows no sign of mites or lice, and the rest of the Epic Thiccies are totally fine.
A sad day, but a real one for backyard chicken keepers. @jacquesinthegarden has experience losing a hen as well and it's never easy.
My plan now is to honor her by committing her to the garden. I'll bury her two or more feet deep in the backyard garden, cover her burial site with rocks for a week or so to deter predators, then plant an absolutely gorgeous plant above her this season.
