Fitness update: First I dropped 50lbs then I gained 20lbs but it wasn’t all fat. It was something else… Doing body weight exercises was fantastic for developing a good mind set and keeping me healthy… but after dropping 50lbs due to the JUST MOVE initiative my desire shifted to lifting weights. I’ve since gained 20lbs and a significant amount of it is solid mass.

“But when/how did this happen? I thought JUST MOVE wasn’t about going to a gym but was ‘just moving’ wherever you are.”

It still is. However, JUST MOVE allows for adaptation as well. Otherwise it would defeat the purpose. So this is why I lift weights now:

My son Morgan wanted to go ever since he was 13. Gym policy says you’ve gotta be 14 to attend. So for his birthday gift I took him to the gym… but after we finished our workout he said… “hey dad, are we going tomorrow?”

That’s when I knew he meant business. We’ve been going 4-5 times a week ever since. A solid 5 months of consistent weight lifting has progressed into: I’m 40 and in the strongest condition of my life. And not because I’m lifting super heavy weights or ego lifting. The key has been consistency. Many days I go and I’m tired or have only 30% in the tank. My energy levels aren’t always optimal. But, in spite of this, because my habit is to go to the gym, I simply JUST MOVE and go to the gym. I accept that each day will be different.

Do I still do calf raises while doing dishes? Yes indeed, it’s now a reflex. What about squats in the middle of the day whilst sitting at my desk. You bet I do. And how do I feel?…
