I just went straight to canvas with this - no preliminary ink drawing - because I felt that the ink "bleed through" was coming through too dark/strong for an infant's delicate skin.
The "model" for this was one of those old/vintage baby dolls with the eyes that never want to stay open at the same time nor point in the same direction, so if it seems a little on the creepy side, that's why - plus the strange low angle/lighting probably doesn't help either.

Since I go through so much cat food (ahem 😹), I've decided to do an occasional series based on the cardboard packaging (aka: upcycling).
I did prepare the surface with an ink drawing on/around the cat's features & then painted white acrylic over the whole, knowing the ink would bleed through the paint & I wouldn't lose my sketch.
I won't be charging much for these considering the imperfect substrate (packaging cardboard) & that I consider them practice/experimentation.

I know it's cheesy, but with my #strokebrain I find I need to employ #mnemonicdevice(s) in order to overcome daily #paintersblock - i.e. even though there's a million things I could, should & would paint, for some reason I find myself staring at a blank canvas without a single thing coming to mind... 🚫🤔 But a #prompt seems to be just the thing I need to get me moving.
That being said, I also know this doesn't look exactly like #JonathanRoumie; it doesn't look exactly like #ElizabethTabish; it doesn't look exactly like #AlaaSafi... but I once had a wise acrylic teacher who said (paraphrased): "At some point you have to forget about the photo & make the art."
So I made the art.

I finally remembered to take some #workinprogress pics!
This was a several-step process over several days - 1st laying down a background color, cutting the paper to size, a quick ballpoint pen sketch, then the final wet-on-wet acrylic layers.
For me, the challenge with impasto has been figuring out what colors I want to "bleed through" to the top layers as it kind of requires "thinking backwards" from the bottom layers up, rather than from the top layers down as one would normally paint.
Also, non-painters sometimes question why the background sketch is even needed since it usually gets completely covered up?
True that, but the pen drawing actually helps me "memorize" the details of the composition before I start covering them up.
Especially important since I often use multiple reference photos when concocting a composition (eg. I'll use the body of a lamb laying facing left combined with the head of a standing lamb facing right & then I need to be careful to harmonize the highlights & shadows etc.), so I really need to see the "finished product" before continuing.
