One of the key's to getting fit and staying fit at 40 years old and beyond is leaving your ego at the door and becoming more adaptable.
I doesn't matter how much you could lift 20 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago or even last week.
The body changes.
If you train hard enough and if you train long enough, it doesn't matter how great your technique is, heck if you live long enough your body is going to break down, you're going to have injuries, limitations and aches and pains.
If barbell movements like squats, deadlifts, bench press and so on hurt you and just feel good anymore, stop doing them!
This doesn't mean you have to stop doing these movement patterns all together just find different alternatives using dumbbells or kettlebells.
Alternative that still delivers great results but keeps you out of pain.
There are so many highly effective variations out there.
I've been using primarily dumbbells and kettlebells for the past 5-6 years and in a lot of ways my physique and my results keep getting better.
I still battle injuries and limitations but I adapt when I need to.
I don't care nearly as much about how much I can lift anymore.
I'm being smarter and more selective with the exercises and workouts that I'm doing.
Some days I don't have to modify anything and I feel amazing and other days nothing feels good and I have to modify and deviate from the plan a little bit.
So, make that shift.
Leave your ego at the door and start training for longevity so you can continue to see amazing results at 40 years old and beyond!
