I recently had a profound realisation within my own family. A well-meaning family member attempted to motivate one of my children by highlighting the progress of their sibling. However, instead of inspiring improvement, it only fostered feelings of inadequacy and resentment in the child being compared. When I pointed out to my family member that this approach may not effectively promote motivation, she protested that it was not her intention to compare. It's a cycle many of us fall into, mistaking comparison for motivation. However, she also had a moment of realisation. "Now I understand," she reflected, "why my child always responded with frustration whenever I talk about how his cousin is doing." It was a powerful lesson for both of us on the unintended consequences of comparison.



Often our words of good intention may not be received in the same way by the message receiver.

Let's remember that each child is on their own unique journey, with their own strengths and challenges. By celebrating their individual achievements and encouraging them in their own paths, we foster not only stronger sibling bonds but also healthier self-esteem and confidence in each child.

Quick tip of the day: Never compare your children to each other, even the subtler of ways. O The only comparison you should make is to themselves. It's one of the most effective ways to build strong sibling relationships.
