"💸 Can Coast FIRE survive a market downturn?
Yes—and I'm living proof that it can.

Five years ago, my family set out on a journey toward Coast FIRE: the point where your retirement accounts are so well-funded that you no longer need to contribute another dime.

We hit that milestone in 2021 with $550k invested, expecting it to grow to $1.8M by the time we’re 60. Fast forward to early 2025, and we had nearly $800k invested.

Then the market dropped—and with it, our portfolio dipped by $70,000 in just two months.

But here's the surprising part: our projected retirement nest egg is now closer to $2M than $1.8M. Even with market turbulence, we’re still on track.

Why? Because we’re staying the course. We're:

✅ Buying low (hello, discounted ETFs)
✅ Tracking spending intentionally
✅ Increasing income sustainably
✅ Keeping a long-term mindset (bear markets average 289 days—bull markets? 991)

Coast FIRE gives us peace of mind and the freedom to focus on our family and life today, not just someday.

The journey isn’t always smooth, but history shows brighter days ahead.

Are you pursuing Coast FIRE or curious about it? Let’s talk—how are you navigating this market?

❤️ Why Paid Leave Matters

For Children:

• Stronger emotional attachment

• Better health outcomes (e.g., breastfeeding, regular checkups)

• Enhanced cognitive and social development

For Parents:

• Lower rates of postpartum depression

• Improved physical recovery

• Increased job satisfaction and economic security

• Higher workforce retention and productivity

👶 What’s the Ideal Length?

12–24 weeks (3–6 months) of paid leave supports:

• Physical healing

• Parent-child bonding

• Long-term workforce re-entry

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 It’s Not Just About Moms

Fathers benefit, too:

• In countries like Norway, paternity leave leads to stronger father-child bonds and better outcomes

• Reduces stigma and relieves the pressure placed solely on mothers

🧭 What Can Be Done?

• National policy reform

• Company-led initiatives (e.g., Netflix, Google, Microsoft)

• Workplace-level advocacy

• A cultural shift from individual burden to collective care

📢 The Bottom Line:

Do we want a society that doesn’t value early emotional bonding between parents and children?

Our investments have taken a major beating lately. Personally, we're down $100k over the last month!

In the beginning on our investing journey, this would have freaked me out completely. But after living through the Great Recession over 15 years ago and the COVID market crash 5 years ago, I realize this is all part of the investing game.

By sticking to our investment plan, we've grown our net worth from $0 to over $1 million.

With 20 years left in my retirement investing journey, I feel confident staying invested for the long term.

How are you feeling? I'd love to hear from you.
