✨ I’ve had the honour of designing the latest $350 Canadian coin! Legacy of the Crown from the Royal Canadian Mint features six iconic royal effigies—each representing a monarch whose profile has appeared on Canadian currency since Confederation. If you’ve followed my watercolor tutorials, you already know how much I love weaving organic elements into thoughtful, intricate compositions. When I’m not painting, I spend my time creating miniature, highly detailed drawings—and many of these end up engraved on Canadian gold and silver coins.
🪙 Surrounding the royal portraits are stately botanical emblems that I lovingly (and maybe a little obsessively) illustrated over what felt like a million hours and a million coffees. Think tiny leaves, regal flourishes, and enough detail to make even a palace corgi tilt its head in approval. I believe the gold version has already sold out, but the silver edition is still available on the Royal Canadian Mint website:

If you’re a fan of coins, Canadian history, or just really, really detailed miniature artwork, I think you’ll enjoy this one. Thanks for letting me share this special milestone with you!

Together, we’ll explore two watercolor essentials—wrapped up in one cheerful yellow rose:
💛 Working with yellow pigments: Yellows can be a little fussy! They hit full saturation fast, so the secret is starting with light, watery washes and building up slowly with glazes. You’ll also find out why purple, not blue, is the magic ingredient for soft, glowing shadows.
💛 Creating a layered background: I’ll show you how to use glazing and negative painting to build dreamy, subtle depth around your rose without overpowering it.
I can’t wait to see your sunny blooms—happy painting! 🌞💛

Struggling to Find Your Artistic Voice? Try This! 🎨 The fastest way to uncover your signature style is to experiment with different art supplies, particularly watercolor paper. The surface you paint on plays a HUGE role in how your work looks and feels! To prove it, I painted the same flower three times using different materials. The results? Completely different moods, textures, and details.
Here are 5 things to pay attention to when trying this exercise yourself:
1️⃣ Cold-Pressed Paper – Perfect for expressive washes and soft blends! If you love fluidity and granulation, this will highlight those qualities.
2️⃣ Hot-Pressed Paper – Ultra-smooth for crisp details and fine lines! If you lean towards a polished, illustrative look, this could be your best match.
3️⃣ Toned or Black Paper – A game-changer! Opaque mediums like gouache, colored pencils, and metallics pop beautifully, shifting how you think about light and shadow.
4️⃣ Mixed Media Play – Add ink, gel pens, or pastels to see if layering different tools enhances your work in new ways.
5️⃣ Pay Attention to What Feels Right – Not just how it looks, but what excites you! Does wet-on-wet feel freeing? Or do you love fine, controlled linework? Your instincts will guide you.
🌟 This simple but powerful exercise helped me find my style and go from a beginner to a professional artist working with brands like Starbucks, Simon & Schuster, and the Royal Canadian Mint. Try it for yourself!
🎥 The full video drops tomorrow—can’t wait to share! 🙌 Let me know in the comments: Which paper do you love most?
