The real reason is because they don't know the rotation of the motor or haven't read the wiring diagram in terms of colors and so the wires are up top so they can easily switch them out without unbolting the grille. However, these wires should be below the grille and covered by some means. Of course, this problem also falls on manufacturers by not providing weathertight connectors that would be adequate for the outdoors. Some manufacturers do actually have watertight connectors for their motors but even with them, the wires are still exposed. I would advise to zip tie a 4” piece of ¾” PVC to the underside of the grill and to put these wires and connectors in there to protect them. The UV from the sun breaks down rubber, plastic, and even PVC. This exposes the wires to rain water which can short out the motor.
