Gunman – A One-Shot Thriller That Shoots Its Shot… and Mostly Hits

There are movies.
Then there are movie magic moments and Gunman is one of those flicks that dares to pull a high-wire act without a safety net.

Directed with the nerves of a caffeinated sniper, Gunman drops us smack dab in the gritty, pulsing streets of Isla Maciel, Buenos Aires, where Pablo, fresh outta the clink is framed for a crime he didn’t commit.
The catch?
This thing is filmed in one continuous take. No cuts. No room for mistakes. Just raw, real-time chaos that feels like somebody dared the filmmakers and they doubled down.

That alone earns this indie thriller some serious respect.

But here's the kicker…. the story almost gets overshadowed by its own cool trick.

Sure, the premise is tight: man returns home, everything’s gone to hell, and now he’s got to survive a neighborhood that’s treating him like the villain in an old west shootout.
And yes, the themes of redemption and revenge are humming in the background, like a guitar string ready to snap, but somewhere in the middle of its visual ambition, the emotional punch gets a little muffled.

That’s not to say it’s hollow far from it.

The actors put in work.
I mean, imagine doing your most intense performance and knowing there’s no cut if you trip over a trash can or forget your line. That’s pressure and the cast handles it like pros.
Pablo’s journey feels urgent, desperate and personal especially if you’ve ever had to prove yourself in a place that already made up its mind about you.

But I won’t lie: this film demands attention.
It’s subtitled, which I know is a dealbreaker for some, but trust me once you’re in, you’re in. The subtitles don’t distract; they dance.
And the camera doesn’t just follow Pablo…. it haunts him, like the ghost of bad decisions past.

Still, I wish the plot had a few more beats to breathe.

It sometimes sacrifices character depth in favor of pacing and while that makes for a thrilling 70 or so minutes, it left me craving a bit more story meat on the bone.

Gunman is a bold, stylish, technically mind-blowing film that dares to do what most action-thrillers wouldn’t even attempt.
It’s not just about what’s on screen it’s about how it’s delivered.
And while the substance occasionally takes a backseat to the spectacle, there’s still enough heart, tension and artistic flair to make it worth your time.

Especially if you're the kind of viewer who loves to see filmmakers swing for the fences.

I give it a strong 3.75 out of 5.
Put it on your radar and if it comes to a theater near you, catch it.
Just don’t blink.
