Prakash often took his 8-year-old daughter, Lavanya, with him to visit those in need and share the gospel in India. A community leader told local Hindu radicals about Prakashâs Christian ministry, and they repeatedly warned him to stop telling Hindus about Christ. Still, Prakash continued his work, usually with Lavanya at his side so she could pray for people. On Jan. 13, 2023, Prakash and Lavanya were riding home on his motorcycle when a truck came racing up behind them, ramming the motorbike off the road. Prakash suffered a head injury, a broken leg and a broken wrist. Lavanya died from her wounds after more than 30 days in the hospital. It is believed the community leader was behind the attack, but authorities refused to listen to the familyâs reports.

Lavanya was born with health and developmental problems to Prakash and Sangeetha. She couldnât move well, and her speech wasnât developing normally. Like most people in India, her parents were Hindu, but no prayers or rituals to the local gods improved Lavanyaâs health. After an extended family member shared the gospel with Prakash, he accepted Christ and began praying with his family for Lavanyaâs healing. âSlowly, Lavanya started to walk,â he said. âOnce she started to talk, all the village people were amazed at seeing this miracle.â After seeing his daughter healed, Prakash decided to become an evangelist. With Lavanya at his side, he began to visit those in need.

Tien received a shocking phone call in the late summer of 2022. Her father, Truong, had been attacked in their home in Vietnam by a group of men led by his own brother. Tien was told that Truong would be dead before she could get home to see him. Her mother died just two months later. At age 16, when she should have been looking ahead to a promising future, Tien had the burden of supporting and caring for her brothers in a culture where being a Christian can be a lonely and painful experience. Tien and two of her younger brothers now live with their maternal grandparents. Her 12-year-old brother, Thanh, who witnessed his fatherâs murder, was taken by their uncle who participated in the attack. Pray for Tien and her brothers, especially Thanh, to be firm in the Lord.

REMEMBERING MARTYRS: On this day in 1896, Bernard Mizeki was martyred. Born in Mozambique, he landed in what is today Zimbabwe as a missionary. He married the granddaughter of the supreme chief, and while he gained the favor of some, witch doctors were furious about his work. He was urged to leave his village but insisted on staying. On June 18, several men arrived at his door and killed him.

Esther Kohâs father, Pastor Raymond Koh, was abducted off the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for his Christian activity in 2017. Reflecting on her fatherâs disappearance and the suffering she and her family endured, Esther said: âI actually asked the questions many times to myself. What is the point of suffering? If there is suffering, is there a God? What Iâve discovered is Godâs role in suffering is to give us hope. In this world, we will all face suffering. We live in a sinful world, so life is not always going to be what we want it to be. But through the pain, through the hardship, actually through persecution, we find hope [in Christ].â

âI had a very secure and good childhood,â Esther said as she thinks of her father Pastor Raymond Koh, who was kidnapped in Malaysia in 2017 after being accused by authorities of trying to convert Malay Muslims to Christianity. Esther struggled with anxiety and depression during the years of waiting for answers and fighting for justice, but focusing on Godâs Word has helped her trust in Godâs goodness, even when his plan is unclear. âWhen we have needed wisdom,â she said, âwe could only depend on God and trust him.â Pray for Esther and her family as they have received little new information about Raymondâs disappearance.

âWe are meant to protect our families as much as possible only after ensuring that we are obedient to Godâs calling. In other words, we do not simply work to make ourselves safe; rather, we work to make ourselves as safe as possible as we obey Christ,â writes VOM President Cole Richards. Many Christians have lost what it means to be âliving sacrificesâ (Romans 12:1), but our persecuted Christian family understands the profound blessings that we experience when we are willing to be Christâs witnesses, no matter the cost.

As Pastor Raymond Koh drove to work on Feb. 13, 2017, in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, several vehicles suddenly surrounded his car and forced him off the road. More than a dozen masked men jumped out of the vehicles, rushed toward the pastorâs car and smashed his car window open. Within 40 seconds, the men had shoved the pastor into one of their vehicles and disappeared. Raymondâs daughter, Esther Koh, said, âIt has not happened before in this nation that someone was kidnapped in such a huge convoy and in such a huge operation.â Before his disappearance, Raymond received death threats and was accused by authorities of trying to convert Malay Muslims to Christianity, which is illegal in Malaysia. Since his disappearance, the family has received little new information about Raymond, and no one has been held responsible for his kidnapping.

The children of persecuted Christians suffer for their parentsâ witness, but our persecuted Christian family willingly pays the cost for being Christâs martyrs. VOM President Cole Richards writes: âThrough examples of Christâs disciples in Scripture, throughout church history and among todayâs persecuted Christians, we see that what matters most is not our childrenâs comfort and safety but the example of faith and obedience we set for them. I pray we will understand that the suffering we and they endure provides the most powerful opportunities to reflect that faith and obedience.â
