10 years ago⌠Remember this little labor love? I remember the idea of making this video came after listening to an episode of This American Life about a man named Daniel Kish. It wasnât just the story about Danielâ born blind, became a human expert in echolocation, now teaches other blind kids how to hike, mountain bike, etcâ that moved me, but it was hearing his mother talk about raising him that I really connected with. She talked about how terrifying it was for her to have to learn how to let go and allow her blind son to try and ride his bike in the street unsupervised. But if she hadnât had the strength and courage to do that, Daniel might never have learned echolocation and been able to pass on the gift of autonomy to so many other blind people over the years. It made me think about Casey and our band. How weâve had to throw ourselves into the hairiest situations over the yearsâ situations that would be very hard even if we were all âsightedââ and how the extra obstacles have forced us to become hyper aware of each otherâs needs and temperaments. To be more in tune with each other. Our empathy machine has slowly turned itself up to 11.
Making this video is not only a tribute to the incredible folks depicted who have overcome adversities of all forms to make their marks, but to our small little outfit and how weâve found our own way to defy the odds simply by existing as long as we have. Thank you to Daniel Iglesias Jr. and Zack Sekuler for helping us bring this to life. Partially shot in Ithaca. Oh yeah, and thereâs a JEEP in it (that one shot of which basically paid for the whole video lol) Happy anniversary.
