Today 15th June is Germany’s first ever Veterans Day! A prickly topic for obvious reasons.
Why now and after so long?
Post‑1945, Germany strongly avoided military remembrance due to its WWII legacy and entrenched pacifism.
The turning point came with Bundeswehr deployments in places like Kosovo, Afghanistan (where nearly 100,000 troops served and 59 Germans died), and later operations in Mali.
Especially Afghan War returnees pressed for recognition, modeling the tradition on ANZAC, UK Armed Forces Day, and US Veterans Day .
Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine accelerated the shift, reawakening debates about a strong Germany taking responsibility for European security .
Chancellor Merz has committed to building “the strongest conventional army in Europe”
It is Intended to bridge the gap between the Bundeswehr and civil society, offering veteran support and raising awareness for their service.
From my perspective this is a complete non event. No awareness, hardly any coverage and definitely not a national rallying point.
If I hadn’t seen a mutilated billboard in the train station I would have completely forgotten about it.

Just spotted this rather culturally provokative ad from Apple.
Germany they’re coming for your cash. Get ready😉
Translated: “you love cash. But did cash ever love you back?”
What do you think? Clever or clueless?

Do you watch or “listen” to YouTube videos?
I often get a comment along of the lines of “I like listening to your podcast.”…which always confuses me because I don’t have a podcast….

May is one of the best times to travel through Europe.
In Germany many day trips can be done via train using the Deutschland Ticket for just 59Euros a month. That’s something to be grateful for.
P.s can you make out the castle ruin? If you like castles then this is the place for you.

If you visit Wales in April one thing is certain. You will see sheep. Lots and lots of sheep. Happy Sunday 🏴

Hi there, I get the question of "why do the British not see themselves as European" a lot. It's a good question and a contentious one. I am planning a video on it but have attempted to answer it in a preliminary letter here: benjaminantoine.substack.com/. I would love to get your thoughts on this piece.

Wishing you all a restful Easter weekend. Do you have plans? I'm heading back to the UK. Interested to see how it is now with the new visa requirements. I'll keep you posted.🐣🐇

Recently the algorithms have been feeding me nostalgia on an industrial scale.
Then and now photos of European cities. Is it just me or is the a yearning for a past “golden era”?
