Videos released this week:
- Acetylcholine and ADHD: Dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin get most of the attention, but acetylcholine is more abundant, and at least as important as these other neurotransmitters in both the brain and the body. A new agent for schizophrenia that works on acetylcholine may help bring more attention to the role this neurotransmitter plays in several prefrontal cortex executive function circuits.
https://youtu.be/QsSakr3kfgY
- DNA Testing for ADHD?: ADHD shows quite high rates of heritability, but we are no longer in the era where researchers are looking for a single dopamine receptor gene that explains this. ADHD is polygenic, meaning that specific variants of hundreds of different genes contribute to the likelihood of developing ADHD. Despite claims to the contrary, currently genetic testing is not able to tell you what medications will work well for treating your ADHD symptoms.

Videos released this week:
- Lead and ADHD
https://youtu.be/BVr669v13yY
- Lying and ADHD
https://youtu.be/40bPK3FORDA
After a 1 minute recap of each video, Iāll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.
- Lead and ADHD: Fifty years ago, before lead was removed from gasoline, the US median lead blood level in children was above 15 ug/dl. An association exists between blood lead levels and later development of ADHD, for levels, and levels as low as 3.5 ug/dl are not considered safe. We've prevented millions of cases of ADHD with this intervention, yet in the US right now, the president has proposed burning more coal (a significant source of environmental lead) and giving utilities an exemption from burning it cleanly.
- Lying and ADHD: It's often stated that those with ADHD are more prone to lying. Others claim that those with ADHD are more honest than the average person. But there are different kinds of falsehoods - simple untruths, spur of the moment attempts to avoid responsibility (reflexive lies) and premeditated attempts to deceive (reflective lies). It is possible, but unproven, that ADHD increases the likelihood of uttering falsehoods i the first two categories, and decreases the third type.

- Iām Dr. John Kruse:
This video is just a brief introduction to the YouTube channel with a description of how I became involved in working with adults with ADHD.
- Paranoia and ADHD:
Paranoia is an irrational or excessive fear that one is being persecuted, harassed or threatened. Our world has become increasingly dangerous, and has also seen a rise of conspiracy theories creating disasters where they don't exist. ADHD itself increases the risk for being diagnosed with psychosis, and amphetamine based stimulants can also increase the risk of developing psychosis. But in addition, the propensity of individuals with ADHD to not hear or see information, miss social cues, and respond to interactions in atypical ways all increase the possibility of mistakenly interpreting benign exchanges as threatening situations.

- Article Review - NY Times - Have We Been Thinking About ADHD All Wrong?
https://youtu.be/g5LBghy2LCM
- Sleep Monitoring - Is it Worth it?
https://youtu.be/eqz8godgeKc
After a 1 minute recap of each video, Iāll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.
- Article Review - NY Times - Have We Been Thinking About ADHD All Wrong?: Paul Tough has been widely criticized his April 2025 NYTimes Magazine article "Have We Been Thinking About A.D.H.D. All Wrong?" He laments that findings from ADHD research haven't fully penetrated clinical treatment and popular understanding of ADHD, but then spends most of the article attacking the research world and making illogical assumptions about mental and physical health conditions. Much of which serves to obscure two of his larger, and valid points, that ADHD exists along a spectrum, and that environmental factors shape who develops ADHD.
- Sleep Monitoring - Is it Worth it?: Commercially available sleep monitors usually measure heart rate and activity, and extrapolate from those to estimate what sleep state an individual is in. They're most useful for comparing your own night's sleep to previous nights, because they are often inaccurate in assessing what state you're actually in at any moment. Excessive worry about sleep can also interfere with sleep.

- Scheduling and ADHD - Interview - ADHD Entrepreneur Summit

- Ketosis and Mental Health
https://youtu.be/oVhSOATXxlY
After a 1 minute recap of each video, Iāll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.
- Scheduling and ADHD - Interview - ADHD Entrepreneur Summit:
Many people, particularly those with ADHD, are intimidated by schedules. But rather than being evil taskmasters, a schedule flows from the brightest, most helpful and nurturing part of you that is trying to align what you do in the moment with your own life goals and values. I recommend slotting in sleep, meals, physical movement, and rest/down time before putting in any work related items. And remembering why you want to, not why you have to do the task provides helpful motivation in the moment.
- Ketosis and Mental Health:
Normally our brain and body are highly reliant on glucose for energy. But under conditions of significant carbohydrate restriction we can switch to states of ketosis, where we burn fatty acids for energy. This state may have benefits in reducing inflammatory processing and improving functioning in brain circuits. But as of early 2025, no research confirms that ketosis is helpful for ADHD.

- Nature and ADHD
https://youtu.be/Fr2eO-tNJcw
- Breathing Exercises for ADHD?
https://youtu.be/NjfB7Y346IM
After a 1 minute recap of each video, Iāll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.
- Nature and ADHD:
Numerous studies support the common observation that immersion in nature can help with ADHD. A handful of studies find immediate benefits in reducing ADHD symptoms from a walk in a park or looking at nature. A larger number of studies have correlated years during childhood spent in nature with lower rates of ADHD diagnoses. Attentional Restoration, Biophilia, and Parasympathetic Promotion are some of the theories that might explain how these benefits come about.
- Breathing Exercises for ADHD?:
A number of studies indicate that meditation and breathing exercises can reduce blood pressure, boost parasympathetic tone (which is often low in ADHD), reduce anxiety and enhance mood. There is very little research specifically on breathing tools to treat ADHD or reduce ADHD symptoms.

Videos released this week:
- Bilingualism and ADHD
https://youtu.be/ZvvOxkCji5Q
After a 1 minute recap of each video, Iāll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.
- Bilingualism and ADHD: For most of the last century, in the US, bilingualism was considered a handicap, interfering with "normal" brain development. Some research indicates that bilingual children have smaller vocabularies and less fluent language than their monolingual peers. But for the last generation, the opposite narrative has held sway - that bilingualism leads to greater mental flexibility, more ability to avoid irrelevant stimuli, better self control, and more skillful planning. Small amounts of data support either side of this debate. More consistently, bilingualism does appear to provide greater cognitive reserve, so that dementia is slower to cause problems in those who are bilingual.

- Does the Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Barrier Save Lives?

- Neurofeedback and ADHD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR7Lc...
After a 1 minute recap of each video, Iāll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.
Does the Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Barrier Save Lives? After 7 years and almost $400 million, a suicide barrier was completed for the Golden Gate Bridge at the end of 2023. In the year since then, suicides have dropped from about 30 a year to 8. But other research on suicide would suggest that rather than preventing suicides, the barrier has merely deflected them to other locations and methods.
- Neurofeedback and ADHD: Repeated meta-analyses, including one just released this month, fail to find measurable benefits from neurofeedback for ADHD symptoms. The absence of evidence isn't proof that these techniques don't help. But given the cost in terms of time and money, proponents of these techniques should be able to more convincingly show that the approach works.
