Spring is approaching! So, of course, I've been starting to collect seeds in preparation for my garden!

If you're like me, and you love buying seeds.. it's very easy, to get carried away in the seed section of your local garden supply store. Especially if you don't have a plan for your garden.

To prevent buying too many seeds, (almost not possible lol) I like to draw out my garden plans in preparation. This way, I know what I have space for in the garden. And it helps me prioritize the kinds of seeds I buy.

Another benefit of planning ahead, is to guarantee that you get the seeds/ plants you want! Believe or or not, there are a lot of high demand seeds. And they can be hard to get your hands on if you wait too long to buy them.

Although it's February, and I won't be able to plant most things in my garden until June, (I live in Washington State) I'm starting to make preparations for my garden now. These next few months will roll by quickly, and before you know it, the growing season will be here!

The meme I made for "fall back"(daylight savings time). It's been 4 months of cold and dark.. and we still have longer to go.

At least spring forward is coming up (March 12th). I'm tired of the sun setting at 4:30 😭. Winters are long and dark here in Eastern Washington.. but we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The longer and warmer days will be coming SOON!

Which also means gardening season is approaching! I just can't wait! Spring and summer just can't get here soon enough!

5 years ago, my family and I were living in an apartment complex. We had a balcony, that luckily enough, was on the east side of the building. The sun rises in the east, so this balcony got plenty of sun.

This balcony was home to my very first garden. I had this urge to have a garden of some kind, so I got creative. The metal containers were used at my wedding (It was a rustic barn wedding, we used the containers to hold ice for beverages). So we drilled holes in the bottoms for drainage, and bought over sized drainage catch containers to go under. (I think they were meant for commercial water heaters).

I had herbs, and vegetables in the metal containers. Then salad greens in the brown floating container (swiss chard, kale and spinach) I learned quickly that the one container you see on the right, was not big enough for all the veggie plants I had in it. (1 tomato, 1 pepper, one broccoli and one brussel sprout plant). Realistically only one of those would have been appropriate for that sized container.

Taking the step to have this small veggie and herb garden on my balcony, helped me to learn a lot. More than you may think. It awakened my passion for gardening, and it brought me so much joy. The garden bench you see in some of my YouTube garden videos, was also present on the balcony. I would sit out there for hours just enjoying my little garden sanctuary.

I had the balcony garden for two years, then we moved into our house. And every year sense, my garden has grown. I added more containers and started with my container garden in the back yard. (This time only one plant in each because I had learned). And eventually I dug out a large sod section by my house, and handed my husband my drawn out garden plan. It had raised beds, and my containers. And he built it for me.

Don't be discouraged if you can't start big. Do what you can where you are, and work towards growth and progress. You may be surprised where you are in 5 years.

I think God always meant for my garden to start small and grow over time. Meeting me where I was at, and gradually taking me to where it was going overtime. And learning all of the appropriate lessons along the way. πŸ’™

It's going to get COLD again here in Eastern Washington. It's very important to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to caring for your animals. This means I'll be outside, cleaning up my chicken coop, making sure they have plenty of fresh, dry bedding. That way, when the bitter cold weather hits, they will have everything they need to stay warm and comfortable.. and frankly, alive.

Chickens (depending on the breed) can be very cold hardy, as their feathers keep them warm. No heat lamp needed (in fact, I'd caution against it. I've heard way too many stories of chicken coop fires.) And truthfully, if they have enough dry clean bedding, they don't need an extra heat source! If your coop is off of the ground, and the shelter has a low ceiling (so the heat doesn't rise away from them) and Bedding for warmth.. they should be just fine!

Another important thing to consider in the winter, is your chickens water supply. We have to worry about their water freezing. Therefore, we had to get a wider water system so that we can put a heat wand in it. This way they still have constant access to clean drinkable water. This is vital to their health and survival, as is true for all animals.

Not only do we rely on our hens for egg's, we love them! So we take their health and care very seriously. Their wellbeing is in our hands, so we do the hard work. A labor of love, if you will. πŸ’™

Ezra labeling River! This is one way Mrs. Cindy teaches the children about the different parts of a pony!

Ezra isn't just learning how to ride, she's learning vocabulary, and how to communicate with a pony properly. I believe in depth knowledge of all different kinds of animals is crucial for children. Especially if you're running a Homestead.

The winter sure does make me yearn for my garden.

Gardening is so good for your mental and physical health. We have this connection to the earth that I think goes unrecognized. Handling soil literally "grounds" us. I always feel so good and fulfilled after pulling weeds, or planting seeds. Just being in my garden in general, gives me this amazing happiness and stillness.

Eating home grown food, unaffected by chemicals is also one of the best things you can do for your physical health. Knowing exactly where your food comes from, and how it was grown is such and amazing benefit. I'd even call it a super power.

It won't be too long now, before spring is amongst us. And I'll be preparing a meal, and be able to go out into my garden, and harvest a cucumber for slicing, strawberries for munching, and tomatoes for my daughter to snack on. The prospect of this fills me with so much gratitude and joy.
