Keeping roots afloat
ACHICANOA emerged as a research project into the traditional rhythms, the cultural forms and lifestyle of the regions of Colombia where these genres originate. The documentary “A Tres Aires de Bullerengue” (‘The three rhythms of Bullerengue) aims to document this beautiful oral tradition and its different songs that reflect the experiences of their community through the ages. The neglect and abandonment of the genre has been reflected in the lack of content available for the spread, the use and the wider knowledge of the culture. This creates a danger whereby the ancestral knowledge of the genre is being permitted to disappear, as its older references fade into oblivion. Taking the project through María la Baja, San Juan de Urabá and the township of Uveros, we had the opportunity to highlight the culture by engaging with the community, learning from them and becoming part of this meaningful lifestyle.
