Do you have a Youtube Channel ?

YouTube just reminded me that it’s been 9 years since I started this channel. Back then, it was called Sea Fishing Marks, and about 6 years ago, I shifted to a vlog style.
Looking back, those first 100 videos were full of mistakes—rough production, shaky editing—but they were all part of the learning curve.
YouTube was a very different place for sea anglers back then. There were fewer videos and much less content for us.

My biggest inspiration at the time was a creator named â€Ș@SlippyLimpets‬ . He showed me that you could capture yourself fishing in beautiful locations and still enjoy the day. That idea stuck with me. Over time, I realised that success on YouTube isn’t about how long you’ve been at it—it’s about how much you put into it.
Just look at The â€Ș@TheFishLocker‬ . He started his channel in 2018, and thanks to his dedication and vast knowledge, he’s become one of the best out there. His editing is precise and efficient—no fluff, just what the audience wants.

I’ve since deleted some of my early videos, especially those that might have encouraged risky behaviour, like traversing unknown cliffs. But I’ll never forget the thrill of receiving my first comment. It proved to me that the sea angling community is connected, and I couldn’t believe someone had engaged with something I had uploaded.

YouTube has evolved so much. There are now countless channels focused on sea fishing, from squid fishing to guitar-playing anglers. It’s a more niche space, but that’s what makes it exciting—there’s room for everyone.
If you’re thinking of starting your own channel, here are three things I’ve learned over the years (and no, it’s not about using the right hashtags):

Define Your Own Success: Ask yourself why you’re doing it. Your channel should serve your goals, whether it’s documenting your own fishing, pushing back against “experts” who get it wrong, or learning alongside your audience. You don’t have to be the best; you just have to be you.

Start Now: Don’t wait for the perfect gear or obsess over editing. Just get your content out there and let your audience find you. Mistakes are part of the journey. I still use my phone to shoot videos!

Be Yourself: Your unique perspective is your unfair advantage. Maybe you live by the sea, know boats inside out, or are an expert caster—or maybe you’re just starting out. Whatever it is, lean into it.

As I hit my 10-year anniversary—and my 50th birthday—there will be some significant changes coming to the channel. Ten years is a good time to take stock and make a significant change.

Do you have a channel that started this year? Drop your @ in the comments—I’d love to check it out!
