I just heard about the passing of Professor Phil Zimbardo on October 14th and wanted to share a brief story in memorial. When I was 13 years, I watched a VHS tape of "Discovering Psychology" which Professor Zimbardo hosted - that tape changed my life. I had heard of the field of psychology but knew nothing about it - no specifics, no key figures, certainly nothing about the history or evidence base. One episode, and I was hooked. Email was a new thing back then, and using my newly created AOL account, I found his Stanford email address and excitedly wrote Professor Zimbardo a long email explaining where I went to middle school and that I sincerely enjoyed his show - I told him I had some questions and typed them out.

To my surprise, he responded - and not a brief response, but over a page long response with detailed and easy-to-understand answers to my questions. I was delighted. As the years went on, I would write to Professor Zimbardo at least once or twice a year in the same email thread, and he would always respond - and within only a couple of days. As you can imagine, when I wrote to him the first time, I was clueless to how inspirational and influential of a figure he was to the field of psychology as a whole. But as our correspondence continued, he became to me - as to so many of his students throughout the decades - "Uncle Phil".

Finally, in 2007 in California at the national convention of the American Psychological Association, I had the chance to meet him. It was after a plenary speech that he was giving, and I was an anxious college kid trying to grow out a beard (rather unsuccessfully, I might add) and find his way in the world prior to applying for clinical psych PhD programs. Uncle Phil shook my hand, smiled broadly, threw his arm around me, and said - "Does anyone have a camera? We need to take some photos, Jay. To remember."

I am so happy to have that memory for my life. Academia can be a place of loneliness, shame, and (frankly) evil - three of the topics that Professor Zimbardo explored in depth in his published research. Hence, it always warmed my heart to know first-hand that there are also kind souls in the field. He made a major impact on my life, and his loss will be felt internationally. But the memories he made for us young people - even decades ago - will stay with us forever.

RIP and God Bless You, Uncle Phil.

-Jay

Apparently it's this YouTube channel's birthday - it would be 6 years old today. Crazy ride. Thanks for sticking it out with me, squad, I appreciate and value you. I know this is the kind of channel that doesn't "blow up" (after hundreds of videos, it would have already) - due to my having a full-time job as CEO of Publication Academy, I have to devote my time to my employees and customers, so I try to batch content for you and always respond to your comments. I always appreciate your letting me know that you like the channel, get value from the content, and especially when you get accepted to programs with its assistance. Let's keep trucking.

Howdy Navigators! I'm going to be doing a series of YouTube Lives in the next 10 days which are master classes on (1) how to select a target supervisor and program for grad school, (2) how to write a personal statement for grad school, (3) how to write a diversity statement for grad school, (4) how to prepare an academic CV for grad school, and graduate school interview preparation. Each of these topics I routinely cover in 1-hour sessions, meaning that the value of the content is at least $1,200 USD. I will be using the sessions as preparation for my professionally filming the master classes for Publication Academy (www.publicationacademy.com), so this will be a one-time occurrence and a great chance for anyone who is applying to grad school this year to get free coaching. What time of day (Eastern Time USA) would you like these sessions to be held?
