In a big update for the Indian EV landscape, Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy has revealed that Tesla is only looking to open showrooms and sell imported vehicles — not manufacture them in India!
While global automakers like Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia and the VW Group have shown strong interest in setting up local EV manufacturing under the Indian government’s new policy, Tesla appears to be sitting this one out.
Under the new EV policy, foreign brands can avail reduced import duties (15% instead of 70%) — but only if they commit to investing $486 million in local manufacturing.
Despite having an Indian office and finalised showroom locations, Tesla seems more inclined to import cars from Germany rather than build them here. Is this a missed opportunity or a strategic wait-and-watch?
What do you think — should India push harder for local manufacturing or welcome Tesla’s imports with open arms?
