Give your characters dynamic poses - by Tom Bancroft (Founder of MerMay) 🧜♀️👇️ Try these tips on your mermaid drawings!
↗️ Tilts - Creates more visual interest. Usually, in a tilt, the shoulders are at an opposite angle to the hips, which creates a more dynamic pose
and contrasting curves.
↪️ Twists - Many gestures will be strengthened further with a torso twist. A body twist—or even a head turn—will boost the appeal, interest, dynamism, and flow in a pose.

Ways to Make your Art more INTERESTING! 👇️ See below
1. Angled lines pointing in different directions can add more life to an otherwise uninteresting shape.
The witch's left hand is angled at 90 degrees from her arm. This creates a more interesting shape overall by contrasting with the curved slope of her arm.
2. Create visual interest by adding variety in patterns, lines, and shapes. Avoid drawing everything the same!
Avoid drawing repetitive or parallel lines. In the image with the bandages, some lines are close together and some are further apart. Some are a little looser than others.
✨️ These variations help to make your artwork more realistic and interesting!

Drawing facial expressions by @charactercube 👇️😲☹️😠
A face squashes together in mad expressions and stretches apart in surprised expressions. This movement only affects the face. The skull is unchanged (it's not flexible since it's made up of bone mass).
It's important to remember that while the shape changes, the
volume (mass) remains the same.
In the last slide:
- The 'Squash' face widens and shortens.
- The 'Stretch' face elongates and narrows.

Use squash and stretch for dynamic characters - by @woutertulp 👇️
Characters in action are usually affected by squash and stretch. One part of the body stretches, causing another part to squash.
❗️ Important ❗️ The total volume of the character/object should ALWAYS stay the same
In most body poses, a stretched side will be opposite a squashed side. This is not always the case, but helps create dynamic contrast in a pose. 🏃🏽
👉 The stretched side will often have a simple design.
👉 The squashed side will have a more complex design with folds, bulges, and wrinkles.

Avoid parallel lines! Why!? 😮👇️
Drawing curved and flat sides opposite each other creates visual interest and looks more organic.
Arms, legs, torsos, and more are not straight cylinders. They have curves.
Keep this in mind when drawing poses. This makes drawing complicated poses easier as well!

Draw the body in perspective by @artofwarrenlouw 👇️ Try out this tip to draw characters at extreme angles:
Use a cone shape 🔺️ divided into sections to act as a guide in drawing a character from above or below.
The body tapers off, getting smaller towards the point of the cone—the wider the cone, the more extreme the perspective.
I always start drawing the biggest part of the body first. So from a top perspective, it would be the head. From a bottom perspective, it would be the feet.

Rule-of-Thumb for drawing by Disney animator, @pumbaaguy ! 😎 See below 👇
Poses need to have a sense of balance, to show realistic gravity.
⬇️If you drop an imaginary plumb line from the character's throat down to the ground, there should be one foot underneath it OR the plumb line should fall between both feet.
🏃🏽♂️ The exception to this rule is when the character is in motion, eg: running, falling, etc.

Common Character Archetypes by randybishopart 😎👇️ Which is your favorite?
'A character archetype is the main role of a character in the story.
- The Ruler: Controlling, Stern (Miles Morales' father, Into the Spider-Verse)
- The Caregiver: Nurturing, Generous, Caring (Baymax, Big Hero 6)
- The Magician: Visionary, Unconventional (Mary Poppins)
- The Regular Guy/Girl: Down-to-earth, Underdog (Hogarth, The Iron Giant)
- The Creator: Inventive, Creative, Nerdy (Ludwig Von Drake, Disney)
Characters can fill multiple roles, but generally, it’s a good idea to have a dominant role for each character to play.
If you try to say too much, the character becomes weak and has a low impact on your audience.
Randy Bishop teaches the 'Fundamentals of Character Design', a FASCINATING course that dives deep into this subject.

Don't just copy the outlines of a figure. Do this instead 👇️ by @renecordovart
This helps to avoid your characters looking flat!
✏️ Use basic shapes to construct the body's poses.
✏️ Then think of the direction the different shapes are facing.
✏️ Draw these as voluminous spheres, cubes, and cylinders. (NOT flat circles, squares, and rectangles!)
These types of exercises are a HUGE help to understand body shape, proportions, and volume properly. You can use photos from online or take photos of yourself or a friend to get visual references.
