I was once on a flight where 2 different airlines were cooperating on that international route. I checked the prices for both, and there was a huge difference. I booked with the cheaper airline, of course, but I bet a number of people didn't check both, and ended up paying a lot more for a flight on the exact same plane. To this day, I have no idea why there was such a difference.

I thought you were going to talk about booking classes, under which you find the absurd “fare basis”. Just in economy, you could easily have 30-40 different prices before discussing routes (like here) or point of sale.
Yes, even the exact same (for instance) L class reservation which is economy class, could have at least 5-10 prices depending on where it’s sold (point of sale). An agency in Latvia could easily sell a ticket from Nice to Las Vegas, and their price is very often different from the price a French agent sees.
But like they say in the TV Shop: Wait, there’s more. If we stay with the Latvian agent selling a return ticket NCELAS, his L class price with point of sale RIX will vary depending on the fare basis, which can reflect when he needs to issue the ticket, baggage allowance, flexibility to make changes, the cost and time of such changes, and other things.
In reality, a flight can have hundreds of prices.
That’s why every airline has a department called revenue management where the brightest minds work.

That a return flight is much cheaper than a one way flight defies all logic.
