In 1579, Jesuit missionaries arrived in Japan with an East African man whose height, strength, and presence captivated those around him. He soon caught the attention of Oda Nobunaga, who saw his potential and welcomed him into his service.

Nobunaga gave him the name Yasuke and trained him in the way of the samurai. Yasuke mastered the sword, embraced the code of bushido, and became Japan’s first foreign samurai — earning deep respect through courage, discipline, and loyalty.

By 1582, Nobunaga was close to unifying Japan. While staying at Honno-ji Temple in Kyoto, he was surrounded by forces led by Akechi Mitsuhide. Nobunaga fell — but Yasuke survived and teamed up with Nobunaga’s son.
