I know that it’s difficult for artist out there who needs to support themselves and their families financially. My encouragement is that you just keep producing art for art sake, and just for the love of it.

Everything is up in the air but I have to just dig it out of the dirt (Tiger Woods ©) and nose to the grindstone and figure it out. Inspiring words and videos from you Andrew, learning so much from you with a lot of gratitude. Thank you 🙌

I agree and have been saying this for sometime now. I feel really sorry for anyone relying on the sale of non-essential items to generate an income because people have less and less to spend on that kind of thing right now. Even teaching art is no longer a reliable source of income. Covid killed a lot of that, and people switched to online, but that market has now become saturated. You Tube algorithms for art are being squeezed out by people making up garbage about world events, past and present and people peddling miracle cures. Many artists moved to Patreon, but that is not only becoming saturated, but people have to know you are there in the first place. Paid advertising has become too expensive for microbusiness to afford.

I am retired, never was a professional artist, and have never been that good anyway. It has always been just a hobby fortunately.

What people need is competing with what people want.
It's not you , you haven't changed , society has.

My art business was doing really well for 4 years. I now have to go back into an office to earn money. People are struggling to pay for petrol and groceries and their mortgages. They're not buying art.

That's what I love about America: A true Entrepeneur can flourish under any circumstances with the proper combination of determination and imagination.

I can see it becoming like locally grown food. But instead as art made by artists

I’m an artist, but also a qualified accountant and economist. I’ve come to the conclusion that artists as individual traders is slowly becoming untenable. It seems to me artists should form collective workshops that do a mix of commissions, one off works and work that can be mass produced for consumer markets in a cooperative business model. This way artists can work together to pool risks and access a larger chunk of market share. Revenues should be distributed evenly and there ought to be a mix of artists in terms of mediums and styles. Membership of such a cooperative workshop should be democratically decided and decisions should be made collectively. This way an oil painter who spends a year painting a large complex scene that will sell for a high price can be counterweighted by a watercolourist who does seascapes and sells high volumes. Imagine high transaction volume and low price artists working with low volume high price artists- all pooling together marketing, risks, market share etc. A new model is needed in a world where the middle classes are being eroded away and we see more economic volatility.

It seems that once an artist is taken up by a rich investor, it’s less about art and more about accumulating money. How about buying art that makes you smile, that lifts your heart or satisfies your aesthetic senses?

The fickle whims of capitalism isn't healthy for pursuits that provide health, creativity and happiness to people (or any of the other things worth living for) - if you're not a useful tool of capital you're always the first on the block.
