But what did He mean?
This concept of being “poor in spirit” is found in some of the Jewish writings discovered at Qumran, known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. The phrase was often considered in juxtaposition to hardness of heart. So the disciples would have known Jesus was talking about a spiritual condition.
Jesus was speaking about being poor in terms of our own spirit and our own ways and not filled with pride, or hard heartedness.
But this can be challenging because it's our nature to be right in our own eyes and reject our need for God.
Listen to this warning from God. "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.'" (Revelation 3:17-18)
And in Isaiah we read, "Thus says the Lord: 'Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool... But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word”
Being poor in our own spirit enables us to be made rich in God's Spirit.

Poor in spirit describes those who have exhausted themselves by righteously supporting righteous good order through these dark days. You see...to resist all this deceit and righteous debauchery we become taxed to the limit. We are hanging on whilst the world burns. Jesus died to give us faith at this terrible time...for many, only rebirth can help us. But relief is on its way, and the Bible Student knows this. Imagine we are in a den of ravenous lions and there is no way out but Jesus Christ's way...just as the early Christians did...and we will find succour as Daniel's group did.
