I was at the ren faire and went to the Arthur Greenleaf Holmes show.
It goes past R. There were some kids in the front and he looked at the parents and was like "Ma'am, they shouldn't be here." She didn't listen so he said "get ready for therapy" and started with a poem about a diseased... kitty. We'll say kitty.
The mom left in a huff offended. Which was wild because he tried his hardest to warn her.

As someone who grew up watching r-rated horror movies, and only had one horror movie that scarred me (something about plants making people kill themselves), i do think its incredibally important for kids to be around adult themes within reason, both to recognize abuse when it happens but also to learn appropriateness. What can be said and what shouldnt be said, by who and when and to who.
As a parent you arent in complete and utter control of what your child hears or witnessess at all times.
As an adult its also important to remember that kids ar certain ages are already engaging in adult (but immature) behaviour, and its better to educate them when its appropriate and when its not rather than to outright ban it. (8-12 year olds, in every decade, swear, make sexual innuendos even if they dont really understand it, think: south park kids. Kids are really genuinely just... like that.) Banning it also runs an unfortunate slippery slope as- what do we define as age or child appropriate? (See: drag queen reading time. Of course the queens arent doing anything not age appropriate, but people still believe their mere presence is not.)
Consent is key.

As a parent, if they're old enough to get the jokes, they're old enough to laugh, and if they're not old enough to get the jokes, they won't remember the "boring parts". We bring our kids to the ren faire every year, and I will always remember the first year our oldest child finally started to get the jokes, and he was split between laughing at them and staring at me that I'd let him be there, lol!

as a parent who would intensely appreciate the tremendous due diligence in warning in case of children/parents who'd rather not expose their kids to things more advanced than they should be at yet, thank you so so so much sir, for just HOW thoroughly you tried there, and apparently continue to try. Despite times like that one there where "nothing came of trying to warn them" (other than this clip, lol), there will inevitably be parents, I'm sure, who will appreciate the chance to either tame things down or get their kids out of there early, and to them it will always be worth you taking the time to check. thank you for not giving up on the checks before starting, even if there's times like these. you rock! <3
