Water actually has a complex phase diagram with more than 20 crystalline phases and at least two families of amorphous forms . The current understanding of H2O puts liquid water in between low-density and high density (LDA & HDA) amorphous ice, but these results add a medium-density amorphous ice (MDA) to the mix.
Rosu-Finsen and colleagues achieved this by ball-milling ordinary ice that’s cooled by liquid nitrogen in order to trigger the formation of an amorphous phase.
This work challenges our fundamental understanding of H2O, with MDA possibly being the true glassy state of liquid water. One far reaching implication is that the heat released from the recrystallization of MDA could play a role in activating tectonic motions on icy planets and moons.
