The Carpathia almost hit two icebergs rushing to Titanic's aid - including the one that likely sunk the Titanic. He knew that ice would be difficult to see in the conditions, so he placed lookouts out the bow on both sides, instead of in the crow's nest.

I can’t imagine how shocking it was for the crew of the Carpathia, to realize just how tragic a scene they had come to find. Of course they couldn’t have done anything more, a ship can only move so fast- but all of those uneaten breakfasts they rushed to prepare must have been such a cruel reminder of how many people never got to eat them.

That statistic makes it so much more tangible and even more heartbreaking. Thank you for all the interesting and accurate representation of the titanic disaster.

I can relate to what he's saying in a small way. Years ago a co-worker died in a car accident (we were delivery drivers). The saddest thing about the wreck, excluding the obvious, was his uneaten lunch.

Arthur Rostran really was the person the Titanic passengers needed. He even had the steam taken out of the hot water units and kitchens to put Carpathia's full power on the route to the sinking. It's said that instead of her service speed of 14 knots, he was able to crack maybe 16 knots out of the engines because of his efforts. They arrived at the scene right on schedule but was only a couple hours too late. This disaster has no villains, but it really does have its heroes.

Wow, what a great and exemplary man. Did just anything that was in his power so not only every soul would be saved but even making it as convenient as possible for them. I hope he will not be forgotten

When I was 12 a cruise ship sunk in the Baltic, not that far from where I lived. 852 people died, only 137 lived. That really put Titanic into perspective for me. I used to think about Titanic almost like a story from a book (it seemed so long ago …) but M/S Estonia made it all too real — just like these uneaten breakfasts. Awful.

The Carpathia wasn’t the only ship to have many meals uneaten. The other ships that tried to dash to Titanic’s rescue did too. The SS Frankfurt had baked plenty of hot bread for the Titanic’s people as they tried to dash to their rescue, but they got turned down before they could reach any survivors so all of those meals were uneaten. I haven’t found much information about the others’ meals, but I can just imagine how many meals the SS Mount Temple, RMS Olympic, RMS Baltic, SS Birma, SS Mesaba, and RMS Virginian probably cooked, but weren’t eaten since they all got turned down before they could reach any of the Titanic’s survivors.

I’ve heard and read a great deal about the Titanic disaster, but somehow I’d never before heard that story. You’re right, it does manage to put it in perspective in a way few other facts or store ever have. Thank you for your meticulous research and for sharing.

Wow, what a poignant moment that must have been. The Carpathian cooks hopefully cooking breakfast for saved lives only to realize that there wouldn’t be people to save. Soul crushing. Similar to 9/11 where ambulances and hospital ER crews were on standby but no one arrived. 😢

Rostron was a freaking legend. I don't think he gets enough recognition for what he did. Also, his crew. Absolute legends, the lot of them.

I think about those that prepared the meals. Pushing themselves to be ready to rescue and save. And then reality hits.

The sheer amount of people that needlessly perished in the Titanic disaster is staggering even a century later.

Historical numbers land differently when you render them in terms that people can visualize. 1500 people are hard to imagine, but I think most of us can picture 1500 plates of breakfast.

That's so chilly. I can only imagine walking into that kitchen after you've served all the survivors, and seeing all those meals, each one representing a death.

Not only that. He skillfully "overclocking" Carpathia from supposed 13 knot max speed to 17.5 knot. Also skillfully avoiding every ice rocks, even the one that sunk the titanic. Thinking he can still race the reapers from collecting Titanic's passenger souls.
Carpathia ended up problematic due to extreme wear and tear during that death race.

My mother worked in a nursing home years ago, and one of the ladies she cared for was a survivor of the Titanic.

Put in this light the immensity of that loss really hits you. It must of been like a punch to the gut for Captain Rostron
