Scientists Discover 'Strongest Evidence' of Alien Life So Far - Or Did They?

Did we just detect alien life? 124 light-years from Earth, scientists studying planet K2-18b found hints of dimethyl sulfide — or DMS.
On Earth, DMS is only produced by living things, like plankton.
If it's real, this could be the first chemical sign of life beyond Earth...

Finally, a concise and straightforward explanation of this whole thing

I can’t hear the word sigma normally again after 2022.

The fact we can just tell what gasses are on a planet THAT FAR AWAY is so cool, a lot of people completely underestimate a single light year let alone a hundred?? And yet a hundred years ago ish we had planes now this? Just crazy to me, we truly live in the era of knowledge...

Thank you for not sensationalizing the findings. Nearly every other article or video concerning these findings all but claim it could be nothing other than life, and that's just ridiculous.

Alien life before Silksong released.

Edit: We can all agree the people who say, "Oh, thank all you guys for the likes!" are stupid. This only happened because I posted a slightly decent comment in the early stage of a video's release. Do better.

We truly are incredible to think of such elaborate ways to test if something is there or not

I appreciate how you temper the excitement of discovery with the reality of the possibilities - not as mocking dismissiveness, but as multiple facets that encourage further study.❤ THAT'S the way science is SUPPOSED to work.

Transit Spectroscopy is one of the most interesting & exciting ways to determine the atmospheric content of an exoplanet. The fact that we can use wavelengths to determine these things will never not blow my mind

bruh that 3 sigma confidence is actually pretty good...for "important" things here on earth we mostly calculate margins of error with only 2 sigma...and thats for laboratory equipment that is not 120 lightyears away from what its trying to measure...amazing...

I’ve finally realised how scientists figure out what substances are on a planet so far away.

Thank you! How many other people have I seen reporting on DMS and other compounds, and you are legitimately the first person to mention the Earth-Centrism.
NGL, it always bothers me that we’re searching for Earth-Life in the cosmos, when we really have absolutely no idea what else could constitute life. Like, yes, that’s what we know, and that absolutely is a very important starting point, but the complete lack of acknowledgement that the only (mostly*) definitive way to look for Alien life would be to go there and look for it in person is what gets me..
*And yea, I do recognise that we’re actually quite likely to miss life that we’re looking straight at because it just doesn’t move or otherwise fit our conventional definition of life. Lol
Like, hell, we may actually find some kind of Living Rock or something. Even crystals here on Earth may potentially be defined as alive at some point in the future for all we know. I mean, seriously, There are a number of crystalline structures that grow and continue upon their foundations in a relatively predictable pattern when met with certain conditions such as “feed”, humidity, etc. It may not be Sentient, or even move, but could that not technically fit the description of Life?

There's also the fact that the DMS concentration on the exoplanet's atmosphere is 1000 times larger than on earth's and the non-biotic means to produce dms are very slow and may not be enough to counter the decay of dms itself
