Is this the answer to the question nobody asked: how to fit a human through a 5-inch hole?

This is a perfect example of why we have the phrase "regulations are written in blood".

One somewhat comforting thing about this is that it was so unbelievably fast that none of them knew what was happening, it was too fast for their brains to even process the pain

It should be noted, there were safety features and equipment that would’ve prevented this from happening, but the company chose not to implement them onto their rig. The newer safety gear was required on newly built rigs, but existing rigs weren’t forced to upgrade their equipment to meet the new standard, so they didn’t in order to save money. Completely preventable.

As a paramedic I’m called to so many scenes where I just see the aftermath with no explanation. Please keep doing these

This reminds me of what my dad told me once, it was something like "If you plan on taking a dangerous job, pick the one that already suffered a fatal accident. Normally those are the ones where the corporations actually bother on checking for faulty designs and safety regulations"

My brother was a sat diver in the North Sea for nearly 13 years. He only quit because he got a job as a dive instructor in Bali for slightly less money but way less danger.

"Kind of gruesome" is a massive understatement.

The guy who survived got a lot of bad reputation for not closing the vault properly and his family was hated for that.
The thing is though, if one single freaking mistake after 9 hours of work is enough to cause death, then it`s clearly the companies fault for not installing proper safety equiment, which was possible at the time. But the company thought, that instead of lowering the risk of such accidents, they could save the money for themselves

The fact that it happened so quickly is both reassuring and terrifying.

It’s hard to fathom so much damage happening in less than a second. Pressure related accidents are terrifying.

Cant decide what is worse.
-being hit by 9 very fast tons
-Having you blood boiled into butter instantly
-Or getting folded literally

Also one of the wives of the men who died in the incident had her husband pinned for the blame by the company, got ran out of town by those who believed the news, and only like DECADES later was able to win in court that the company was responsible, and had her husbands name vindicated.
