The question is not just why not booking round and skip the return. The big question is why you would get in trouble for quite simply taking advantage of an offer. You cannot? Is that not legal? The moment you put an offer in the market, that's it: it's the offer. Guests will take it if they want and you should not be capable of doing anything against it, other than just removing the offer.

As someone who worked as a travel manager for a company, this one-way prices are only for individuals booking. When a company has a ‘company account’ with an airline, prices are better, since they know we book many many flights. Still a bit more expensive than a round trip, but it usually compensates with the amount of miles we win, and are always used later for upgrades and flights. Corporate accounts work a little different, every airline has different offers than to the individual public, and they even have very different offers depending on the companies size. Small companies have higher prices than big corporations

That only applies if you're flying internationally. There have been numerous times I've flown two one way tickets within the US,(with a different airline each way) because it was significantly cheaper.

There’s actually a larger additional reason. Taxes and fees, specifically for international flights there are several countries that will actually reduce the taxes a flight will have depending on how long you are staying in that country. When you book a one way, you are charged the maximum amount

Dan, when you fly domestically, there are times when flying one way is cheaper than round trip. I flew into DCA, but flew out of ORF, so getting 2 one way tickets wound up being way less than a round trip ticket.

Back in 2016, I booked a return flight from Bordeaux to Amsterdam, but I booked the return flight on a far off date on a cheap time. It was far cheaper than one way.

In the 90s domestic flights had similar issues so I booked roundtrip and kept the return unused which allowed for me to use them as open returns thanks to the no penalty rules of the day.

Elaborate on the "you're gonna get in trouble" part

I had back to back solid experiences with BA (NOV and AUG), both in Economy and Business. Had to transit both times through Heathrow (changing terminals as well), and it was all super smooth! Loved the experience, both on board and on the ground! :)

Tickets sold in US are free to change or cancel for future credits except BE/LLC tickets. So it’s fine to flight the first segment and then change or cancel the remaining trip.

This doesn’t apply to Ryanair (one of the aircraft featured) Ryanair is point to point and so pricing isn’t based on anything

However you can get great deals on multi city bookings sometimes which also gives you tons of flexibility in the right circumstances

Not true with corporations. Most corporations get a discounted rate since they typically buy tickets in volume. Bottom line practically nobody is paying those ridiculously inflated prices.

That's why we'd better book a round-trip ticket rather than a one-way ticket.

Maybe flying internationally yes. A lot of times it’s actually cheaper flying one way. Especially because you can choose different airlines if you please.

‘Get in trouble’ with the airline…HOW? Are there legal precedents or stipulations that they can charge you with?

I always booked the round trip and skipped the return flight for a cheaper price! I do it 3-4 times a year though!

It’s the same at when you buy merchandise. The business tends to make more if you hug two flights because there is a chance no one will purchase the second. So better to sell the second flight to get profit.
