As a lifelong fighting game player and lifelong metal head, this is 100% spot on. Which is what I’ve grown to expect from this channel anyway lol. I don’t comment often, but thank you, Gerald, for all the hard work you put in on such top quality content. The community is lucky to have you

As someone who is terrible at classical fighting games, the metal analogy helped me understand the concept.

CoreAGaming just fucking gets fighting games as a whole. As someone who mostly comes from Melee but has since taken up other fighting games, I love his analysis and general acceptance of all the subgenres of fighting games. And everything on the channel is well thought out and well spoken.

Over time we also see this evolve especially as new generations of players enter the space, it inevitably expands. This is visible today using your analogy; 10-15 years ago the idea that linkin park, deftones etc were “metal” would have been a complete joke, but now you’ll find much of the community accepts these bands as having contributed much to the genre as a whole and given rise to modern metal. Notably evolution of this kind and community acceptance often stems from subsequent creators drawing inspiration and succeeding in the same space. Ideas are often proven valid with iteration and monetarily successful iteration especially goes a long way towards social approval

As a long time melee player (falco) that got into tekken (all tekkens but t8 Bryan) a bit over a year ago, this hit home for sure. Much appreciation.

With how widespread fighting games can be in terms of gameplay, I understand why he uses analogies like these.

If you ONLY play Smash, it's true that you won't get much credit (unless you're a pro). The FGC expects a "fighting game player" to be someone who either plays "games like Tekken" or "games like Street Fighter." If you dislike Street Fighter and prefer something like King of Fighters, you get even more love.

Linkin Park probably would have been a well accepted analogy.

Smash melee was my first "fighting game" and it definitely helped me a lot when I learned dbfz and sf6. The notions of space and neutral game are similar.
The hard (but also fun) part was learning combo and using a stick.

That is actually a pretty good analogy IMO

This is why I normally clarify and say I been playing 2D Fighters for a long time.. since I only just gotten into Tekken for the last couple of years.

There was a "hybrid theory" pun somewhere in here...
As someone who likes both traditional and hybrid fighters, and both rap and metal... To be honest, fanbases of all four of them have toxic people who are needlessly vitriolic towards whoever or whatever they think doesn't fit in.

Metal might be among the most troubling, though, since its "fan" vitriol can extend into some very hateful territory. I feel like some examples for the analogy might've been accepted, but I don't engage enough with metal fans (that I didn't meet through other means first) to know well enough.

My favorite fighting game is gundam exvs. A series of 2v2 arena fighters focused on spacing and projectile based combat that has limited to no oki and has very few combos that go beyond 3 hits. I often feel like my game is kinda alone on an island especially since very few of its direct competitors in arcades ever get console/pc releases and even less often get english releases.
