The territorial dispute was resolved in 1899 and then after the Venezuelans asserted irregularities in 1949 (50 years later), by an agreement in 1966 to resolve the dispute practically, peacefully, and satisfactorily for the parties.

In 2018, after failing for 50 years to reach an outcome under the framework of the 1966 agreement, the matter was submitted to the International Court of Justice to decide whether the 1899 Agreement was in fact still valid. The Venezuelans have rejected the authority of the Court on this matter.

It is widely believed by independent international assessment that the results of the Venezuelan Referendum were falsified by the Venezuelan Government - which points to the government using the territorial dispute as a distraction from their rapidly deteriorating economic position and fraught political stability. In this it has allusions of Argentina starting the Falklands War.

Guyana should invite the US to have a military base within their territory in the disputed region.
America would love the logistical boost this would give to their influence in South America, and Guyana would also get an economic boost from having a US base on its soil in addition to the defence guarantee and deterrence.

And at that point, Venezuela would be screwed and they'd know it.
What are they going to do? Invade territory that has a US military presence on it? That's a FAFO move.

And to make things worse for them, no doubt American intelligence agencies would use the Base to keep a close eye on Venezuela.
It would be a beautiful FU by Guyana.
