Have you ever heard of the Blue Banana? ๐Ÿง This oddly named region is one of the most important economic zones in Europe! Spanning from the United Kingdom, through Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, part of Austria, and down to northern Italy, this area is home to a dense concentration of industry, finance, and innovation. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿญ The term was coined by French economist Roger Brunet in 1989. If you take a closer look at the GDP map of Europe, youโ€™ll see how the highest GDP regions form a shape that resembles a banana โ€“ and thatโ€™s where the ""blue"" comes from, representing Europe. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’™ This zone houses some of the continentโ€™s most influential cities, including London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Zurich, Munich, and Milan. ๐ŸŒ With its thriving ports, financial hubs, and a high population density, the Blue Banana is the beating heart of Europeโ€™s economy. Find out how this peculiar-shaped region earned its name and why it holds so much power in Europeโ€™s financial and industrial landscape! ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

It's just called blue because they happened to color it in blue the first time they talked about it. Also the concept is a bit updated. These days a different model called the red octopus exists. It still has its core as the blue banana but had tentacles stretching out from it. I can mention the one going from Germany into Czechia and Southern Poland or the one going from northern Italy into southeastern France

Two additional facts:
1. Inside the Blue Banana are located the two industrialised countries with the highest standard of living by far: Luxembourg and Switzerland
2. According to many historians, the Banana exists since 1355, when Europe just recovered from the worst plague pandemic in history which killed 40% of the Europeans of the time. The territories inside the Banana recovered much faster and are wealthier ever since.

Fun fact in that line something like 80% of all human inventions were made. I think that influenced it too. For me itโ€™s unlogic that Paris and Vienna falls out, additionally Prag Bratislava and Warschau are also important. The GDP in Vienna is higher than the Rhine area in Germany where all of the steel and coil industry is dead and sold out to china and abroad.

When I was studying Economic Geography in Secondary (High) School this area plus Northern France including Paris was referred to as the Golden Triangle in which lived 500 million Europeans. The Golden Triangle Market. I think Golden Triangle is better descriptive than pinky panther or blue banjo!

Learned about this in my geography class in school, and also about the decline ongoing in Western Germany due to the decreasing importance of the coal and steel industry.
