I volunteer at a shelter in the US and bully breeds are BY FAR the breed that is returned the most often. They are also some of the most challenging dogs in the shelter because of exactly what you said--they have a tendency to be both incredibly dog reactive and incredibly strong. Of course, every dog is different and there are a great many bully breed dogs who are wonderful. I just wish they didn't come into the hands of people who don't know how to train or socialize them.

We had the same line of American Bulldogs out of South Louisiana for generations. Ours have been excellent duck, hog and deer hunters, with there our hunting license. Bonus if your canine can have six tags. My girl was trained as a service companion, we spent thirteen wonderful years together, she passed in Dec. I’ve had English and American bulldog’s though out my life and there is no other breed for me.
THANK YOU for wisdom and information you equipped us with.

I would absolutely love one but someone who doesn't pull very much is better for me because I don't walk well. I had an American Bully mix who was an absolute sweetheart but did pull like a draft horse. And she didn't want to be a service dog which is what I got her to train her to be. She just wanted to be a happy goober with lots of space to run and play. She went to become a very happy nearly trained family dog.
Now I have a Boxer/Great Pyrenees who does want to be a mobility service dog. He's much bigger and also a million times more calm. And he loves training time and on duty service puppy time. He does pull but I want him to just a little because it helps me to walk. He's learning to pull just the right gentle amount for me.
My American Bully mix was actually a much stronger dog at only 60 pounds than my Boxer/Great Pyrenees is at 88 pounds and still growing. My Bully had stronger jaws too. She could chew deep grooves in a beef shin bone in no time. My big boy can leave some serious grooves too, but not as deep and not as fast.
Also, don't think you're going to force an American Bully to take a pill if they don't want to. My girl's neck was so strong there was absolutely no holding onto her muzzle to open her mouth. I ended up flinging it in her kennel and she ate it happily. The goober.
My big boy on the other hand will hold still for me while I put my hand over his muzzle and usually opens his mouth just because I nicely ask him to. He lets me stick my whole hand in his mouth to push the pill past the back of his tongue. But he's also the smartest dog I've had and somehow manages to spit it out if I don't do it really, really well and make absolutely sure he swallows. He has a teasing playful look in his eyes when he does. I don't actually know how strong his neck is because he doesn't fight with me.
Anyway, yes. American Bullies can be a force to be reckoned with. It sounds like American Bulldogs are too. They sure are beautiful, though. And I'll bet they're very huggable.

American Bulldogs are awesome dogs in the right hands, but definitely not for a first time dog owner. Not only are they strong but also determined, bordering on stubborn at times. My Pinky Louise is now 13 and very good with people of all ages but very choosy about other dogs and absolutely no cats. I love the breed but would caution someone to do their research to decide if they are a good fit.🐾

I've gotta say, I've had about 10 dogs in my life, this is THE most gentle, sweet natured, dog I've ever had!
She's great on the lead
She's great with other dogs
If anything She's a bit scared around loud children 😅 but other than that she's an absolute darling
I love her ❤❤
