Did you know why there's still no bridge connecting Great Britain ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง and Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช? The Irish Sea ๐ŸŒŠ separates the two islands, with all travel and trade relying on ferries โ›ด๏ธ or planes โœˆ๏ธ This is surprising, given that nearly 40% of Northern Ireland's imports and exports come from Great Britain. A bridge or tunnel, like the famous Channel Tunnel ๐Ÿš‡, could bring major economic benefits ๐Ÿ’ฐThe most suitable spot? The North Channel, a 30-kilometer stretch between Portpatrick in Scotland and Larne in Northern Ireland. But while a bridge here is technically possible ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ, there's a shocking obstacle: the Beaufort's Dyke ๐Ÿ’ฃ This deep trench, the Irish Sea's lowest point, hides a dangerous secret ๐Ÿคฏ After World War II, it became a dumping ground for 1 million tons of munitions, including chemical weapons โ˜ฃ๏ธ Disturbing this area could lead to an environmental disaster ๐ŸŒ

Makes sense to me to put chemicals in the same water you eat seafood from!

Damn. Short sighted is an understatement. "Out of sight, out of mind" has been the policy of too many governments for too many years.

I'm from Ireland and I can confirm we're trying to drift further away to the point where a bridge isn't possible.

Yeah, until your grandkids have to figure out what and how to deal with the mess you've left behind...

My grandfather was one of the naval officers employed to dump the munitions, a top secret mission at the time. My grandmother managed to get stuck on the ship and unable to disembark, she hid in my grandfather's cabin and spent her entire time at sea knitting warm socks for the freezing cold crew.

A 21-mile bridge isn't enough of a reason not to build that bridge?!

@Covkiller

The reason is because the British government does not invest in anywhere north of London.

I'm a coastguard in the Isle of man and if we get storms coming from that direction we get all kinds of crap washing up but usually phosphorus we use to have to patrol the beach and pick it up dangerous stuff

According to British studies the most suitable location would be the shortest place to build a crossingโ€ฆโ€ฆ it took studies to figure that out.
