We used to have a duck race for charity in Ottawa. People would “sponsor” a rubber duck and they were released from the locks down the canal. Went with my sister and my son was maybe 2 at the time. I was holding him in my arms so that he could see. A child next to us was holding his personal duck (not numbered and not part of the race). It felt a bit surreal as I watched the very rapid thought processes as my son saw the duck, saw the mass of ducks being released into the canal and deciding the duck had to join his kind. I didn’t even have time to stop it before my son had reached, grabbed and thrown the other child’s duck in the water. (I offered to buy a new duck for the child. The family declined.). Apparently it was newsworthy when the straggler was identified by a news short saying there was an extra duck at the end of the race. I have fond memories - and mild trauma - of duck races.
