The Demon Core, a plutonium sphere from the renowned Manhattan Project. In 1945, it tragically claimed the lives of two physicists, earning its place as one of mankind's deadliest objects.

I wonder if the Demon Core inspired the Incredible Hulk's origin story? A little less organ failure and a little more green man ☢️

Louis Slotin had the rest of the researchers draw an X where they were standing after the demon core went critical in order to calculate how much radiation they were exposed to

A room full of brilliant men and no one thought the screwdriver could be an issue?

I work for a space research firm, and we have a saying:
Techs get to touch everything
Engineers can touch some things, with supervision
PhD's only get a pencil.

for anyone who do not realise how much 1 sievert is:
I did an internship in a nuclear powerplant once, I was allowed to visit the building in which the reactor is, I spent a day there and all I received was 4 microsievert (0,000004 sievert)
210 is a lot

Also don’t forget that my man was smart enough to document where everyone stood in the room so we would have more knowledge about what dose they got and the outcome of that dose on their body. Also they were able to calculate about how much time each person had to live. Kyle Hill taught us well!

The demon core sounds like an ancient relic of immense power that the villain is trying to get to end the world

The son of one of the scientists in the second demon core accident was my chemistry professor. His father was the second person to receive the highest dose of radiation, Dr. Alvin Graves. Although he almost died, and his sperm count went to zero, he was able to recover and eventually had my professor. My professor would joke that he still glows at night

Same thing happened to the Chernobyl first responders, also known as the "Liquidators" and the news crews. They either looked inside the blown reactor or tried to film it while hovering over it. Depending on the amount of exposure the fatal outcome was almost immediate or a few decades later. A special "Liquidator medal" was awarded to those exposed.

Just to be clear, about every other scientist that saw Slotin use the screwdriver for that told him how dangerous and reckless it was, one even said that he'd be dead in less than a year if he continued doing that and he was right. Also, it's not that Slotin didn't know the risks, but he could get better results with the screwdriver than with actual approved equipment and he was confident since he had done it 15 times before with no issue, but obviously he ran out of luck.

I think I read something that said that after the blue flash occurred one of the scientists told everyone in the room to stay exactly where they are and mark down where they were standing in the room during the flash. This was done to record the levels of radiation poisoning based on distance and to see how long it would take for each of them to die according to that distance. This info became very useful for future studies.

That sounds terrifying. Just a flash of light and then all of a sudden you start melting and feeling indescribable pain

In a similar case in Japan in 1999 Hisashi Ouchi was a person whose DNAs in most cells got mashed. While the cells still worked like nothing happened, they stopped being able to replicate and replace. Towards his end his skin shed and no new skin was produced. Same happened to all his organs except the heart. When he was rushed to hospital he was feeling healthy enough and casually asked the doctors if the accident would increase his cancer risk. Little did he know then he got something far worse.

A very smart friend of mine told me that intelligence and stupidity are not opposite ends of the spectrum. There are very smart people who are also very stupid, but there are people who aren’t particularly smart, but take extra precautions to not do anything stupid. This video reinforces that observation.

“A screwdriver? How could they be so careless!?”
As a scientist that has worked in plenty of labs in both the private & public sectors (as well as in labs in the industrial, commercial or research fields) - I can confirm that I have never seen a lab that DOES NOT cut corners (or at the very least has a least one scientist cutting corners)

I think it's important to note that this core wouldn't have exploded like a nuclear bomb because it wasn't compressed. The lack of compression would greatly reduce the number of fissions. But there probably would have been a meltdown situation like an out-of-control reactor.

One of the scariest parts is in the second experiment after it went super critical, the guy closest to the core said “well, that does it”, he knew that everyone in the room was basically a walking corpse and it struck hard

The maddest bit is that after it happened, Slotin is reported to have said “Well, that does it”.
One of the coldest, hardest lines to utter after blasting a room full of radiation.

both the scientists time in the hospital is very scary and so sad, its like every cell in your body forgot how to duplicate itself and you just melt away
