Id think enough pressure to the carotid arteries at the neck for an amount of time would be sufficient.
I remember an episode of bungo stray dogs where akutagawa was strangling a character, but staying true to his promise to atsushi, he didnt kill the character, he simply stopped sufficient blood flow to the brain via pressure to the carotid arteries in the neck. So i think even if someone was holding their breath, theyd still probably pass out or die.

Mark didn't "choke" Conquest. Instead he died because Mark cut off the blood stream to his brain
