Using a new type of "artificial photosynthesis," Chinese astronauts just produced rocket fuel and oxygen in space. This technology could one day be support deep space missions and off-world colonies.

People saying you can't create something from nothing think stating the obvious is smart. Natural photosynthesis also requires fuel, why wouldn't artificial photosynthesis.

It converted Carbon dioxide and Water to oxygen and ethylene(rocket fuel) through artificial photosynthesis.

Scaling this is a huge challenge so don’t hold your breath just yet. Artificial photosynthesis has been figured out for a while but this implementation is certainly very promising

Honestly its understated that the implications are huge. If we could even use this on earth itd be amazing.

I do follow the Chinese space journey with great interest as I followed NASA back in the 70's!

Thrust demands that some material is ejected backwards. This eventually consume all the material on board. Sunlight by itself won't be able to create fuel from nothing, it needs raw materials. So, although impressive, it is a limited approach. This technique might be very useful here on Erath.

You'd still need to carry along water and CO2, which takes just as much fuel as carrying the final product, plus you have to carry the photosynthesis machine and energy supply as well.
This is only applicable for food because the same atoms that have been eaten and digested into CO2 and water could be turned back into food
Edit: You could of course find water and CO2 at the target planet

This changes everything that was believed to be a limitation which we a human had to deal with when it came to space travel
