Actually, the reason the US is only at ten is because pretty much every other country in the world reports data on their cities using metro area, while the US only uses city limits. If you change to using metro area for the US as well, they have 53(including San Juan, Puerto Rico). That’s more than India, but India has way more people in each one on average.

In my opinion this is showing a completely different thing than everyone is saying. I think it’s more showing that countries like the USA, or India have massive cities like NYC with 18 million people, or Delhi with 33 million people all in one city, and countries like Canada have many smaller cities with closer to a million people. So places like Canada have many average sized cities with around a million while the USA has massive metropolises.

Even though the Netherlands has zero cities with more than a million people, we do have one of the largest megalopoli (mega cities) in western Europe, the 'Randstad'.
It's a continuous metropolitan area with a population of 8.4 million people.
Edit: it's also one of the reason why in nighttime satellite photo's, the Netherlands is the brightest spot in Europe. The other reason being greenhouses.

Almost entirety of India is livable that's why population is spread out, while in case of China, Coastal China is way way more habitable than 70% part(western and central China), hence more million+ cities
Also, Urbanisation has already occured in China, while it is currently happening at great pace in India
So the gap between the two giants will decrease in near future. I'm not sure if India will overtake but both will have like 90-120 million+ cities in next 25-30 yeras

Imagine you’re a Russian person who lives in Russia.
Would you rather?
Live next to a million or more people in one of the only understandably livable places in your country.
Or.
Live in a frozen waste land where nothing lives and that covers basically all of the country and where nothing grows or lives.
Now imagine your a Person from the United States living in the United States
Would you rather?
Live next to all of those annoying people in a nice place.
Or.
Live away from all those people in an as nicer of nicer place.

This really shows urbanization. Russia is far more heavily urbanized, and so are a lot of of these nations with less population, but more cities. China is a good example. India has less cities that have over 1 million people, but that’s because India is at a lower stage of industrialization. They have a lot more rural folk.
