The TRAGIC LIFE Behind Etta James' Soulful Voice
1 videos • 15 views • by Remember This History & Nostalgia Channel Etta James didn’t just sing pain—she made it beautiful. Her voice could seduce you, shatter you, raise you from the dead. She wasn’t just an icon. She was a survivor. A storm wrapped in velvet. Before she was Etta James, she was Jamesetta Hawkins, born on January 25, 1938, in the deep shadows of Los Angeles. Her arrival wasn’t celebrated with lullabies—it came wrapped in uncertainty. Her mother, Dorothy Hawkins, was just 14 years old. A teenage dreamer with fire in her veins and no real plan for motherhood. Jamesetta’s father? She never knew him, though later in life, she often claimed he was Minnesota Fats, the famous pool shark. Maybe it was true. Maybe it was a fantasy. But in a childhood full of holes, she needed a story to cling to. Something—someone—to explain the chaos she was born into. From the start, love was elusive. Her mother vanished in and out of her life like a ghost, leaving Etta to be raised by a series of caregivers—some kind, others negligent, even abusive. She lived in boarding houses, was passed between foster homes, and often found herself begging for attention in places no child should ever be. Her sense of stability never came from people. It came from sound. Music was her first salvation. By age five, she was belting gospel solos at St. Paul Baptist Church. Her voice was so powerful, so overwhelming, that it stunned congregations into silence. The church wasn’t ready. The world wasn’t ready. This little girl—barely tall enough to reach the microphone—sang like she’d lived through war. The choir director, obsessed with perfection, would beat her when her vibrato ran wild, trying to tame what could never be tamed. But even then, even as a child, Etta refused to be silenced. She was growing up in South Central L.A., surrounded by danger, poverty, and noise. But she was also soaking up the golden age of American music. Her nights were spent with her ear to the radio, listening to doo-wop, jazz, gospel, and blues. She idolized singers like Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, not because they were polished—but because they bled when they sang. She wanted to do the same. By her early teens, she had started to rebel in full force. She ran the streets, skipped school, drank, and got into fights. But even in the chaos, music kept calling. At 14, she formed a girl group called The Creolettes, singing on street corners and at local talent shows. And that’s when fate intervened. In 1954, bandleader Johnny Otis heard her perform and knew instantly: this girl was different. He helped her rework a risqué answer song to Hank Ballard’s “Work with Me, Annie,” and by 1955, she recorded “Roll with Me, Henry” (later renamed “The Wallflower” due to conservative radio standards). It was a hit. The shy girl from the streets of L.A. had a record on the charts—and a new name: Etta James. But fame, as she would soon learn, wasn’t the fairy tale she’d imagined. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe To The Remember This YouTube Channel Here ► https://geni.us/RememberThisChannel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 💥 History and Nostalgia Channel (20th Century History Documentaries)💥 Welcome to the Remember This YouTube History and Nostalgia Channel where we discuss thought provoking subject matter from recent the recent past to modern day... get ready for 20th Century History Documentaries content on all things from conspiracy theories to real events and how they shaped our lives. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 💥 View The Remember This Channel’s "Top 10" Most Watched Videos:💥 #1: ⏩ https://geni.us/WizardOfOzMovieTribute #2: ⏩ https://geni.us/JohnLennonLostWeekend #3: ⏩ https://geni.us/NatalieWoodTragicLoss #4: ⏩ https://geni.us/ChateauMarmontSecrets #5: ⏩ https://geni.us/TheJimiHendrixStory #6: ⏩ https://geni.us/JimMorrisonLifeStory #7: ⏩ https://geni.us/MarilynMonroeLifeStory #8: ⏩ https://geni.us/BobHopeLifeStory #9: ⏩ https://geni.us/BonScottLifeStory #10: ⏩ https://geni.us/DorisDayLifeStory My Gear: My Main Camera ► https://geni.us/PanasonicFZ1000-20 My Microphone ► https://geni.us/RodeNTUSBMicrophone My Microphone Boom Arm ► https://geni.us/RodeMikeBoomArm My Headphones ► https://geni.us/HD280ProHeadphones My Wireless Headphones ► https://geni.us/BoseQC35HPhonesSilver ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe To The Remember This YouTube Channel Here ► https://geni.us/RememberThisChannel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Remember This YouTube Channel Suite 12, 5th Floor, Dymocks Building 428 George Street, Sydney, NSW 2000 ▶️ E: [email protected] ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #ettajames #atlast #youtubepodcast #youtubepodcasts #podcast #historyandnostalgia #historydocumentaries #bio #biography #biographies
