Today marks 4 years since opening my salon! 💇🏾‍♀️ 🎉

And this year makes 10 years since I dropped out of college and enrolled in cosmetology school.

Wow! I’m too young to throw out numbers like these lol

If you told 9 year old Mirna, who had a flaky scalp and recovering bald spots, that she was going to be a hairstylist, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I didn’t choose hair, hair chose me.

After 3 years of feeling stuck and being depressed in college, I decided to do my first big chop. (You know, anything to feel like you have control over something in your life)

That big chop sparked my obsession with natural curly hair and how to better take care of it. I started a blog to document everything I was learning.

After some time I was like, “Wow, I care more about hair than what I’m learning in school.” Of course everyone around me told me to stay in school for my last year and a half. But I couldn’t bare to do another day, so I dropped out and 2 months later I was in beauty school.

That was ONE of the HARDEST decisions I ever had to make. I disappointed a lot of people at first. But at the time, where everything felt dead, hair was the only thing giving me life… It fuels and supports me to this day!

All this to say…Y’all make that hard decision that you know your soul is assisting you to make. It will always be worth it.

Thank you to my clients, customers and community for never making work feel like work and always supporting me and my small business. You all truly mean the world to me. It’s been an honor to be your hairstylist 🙏🏾💖

For healthy thriving curls, you have to make sure you're washing, moisturizing, and sealing your hair on a CONSISTENT basis.

I recommend cleansing your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner every 7 - 10 days. Then using a leave in conditioner and Oil to style and refresh your hair as needed.

Lately a lot of clients have been asking me how can they grow out their hair?

They say it seems like their hair has been stuck at a certain length for years.

Your hair is always growing even if it may not seem like it. The key to retaining length is all in how you consistently show up for your hair.

Use the tips below to help you build your healthy hair regimen for longer growing hair.

Damaged hair is prone to breakage.

You may notice and short, uneven pieces as you detangle.

When you experience breakage, it's likely due to a lack of elasticity, meaning the hair is in a fragile state and cannot stretch much without breaking.

Use a hair mask once a week to help the integrity of your hair.

Deep conditioners provide layers of protection and hydration for hair that is over-processed, dry, or lacking strength and elasticity.

Is your hair constantly dry no matter how much water you give it?💧

Well you may have low porosity hair.

Low porosity hair has cuticles that are tightly packed together and flat. This makes it hard for water to absorb into the strand.

Use these tips to properly moisturize your low porosity hair:

Never skip the shampoo: Low porosity hair is prone to product build up.

Heat up your conditioner: Heat will allow those tightly closed cuticles to open up and let in moisture.

Stop using heavy oils and butter: Thick oils and butters causes build up and promotes dryness.

Start using light weight products: Light weight products are the best option for low porosity hair because it’s small enough to penetrate into the hair strand without weighing it down.

If you use heavy products like butters, oils or gels, after a while product build-up will block moisture from reaching your curls.

Build-up doesn’t only promote dry hair but a dry, itchy and flaky scalp too. It’s a good rule of thumb to detox your hair with a clarifying shampoo at least once a month to combat build up.

I always grab the Volume Shampoo because it uses bentonite clay to detox your hair while keeping it moisturized.

It’s also my go-to for people with fine hair because it won’t weigh their curls down.
