This is the solution I landed on after yesterday's stream to "grunge-up" the icon designs. Copying/Pasting each design into Photoshop and then applying a Displace effect (with grunge texture as the displacement map) to grungify the icons in a way that feels more connected to the font, background etc. ✌️

Logos and icons need to look great at every size — from billboards to app icons. But most designs fall apart when scaled down because they rely on too much detail or weak structure.
Here’s a 4-step real-world example of how to simplify a graphic the right way, without losing its identity:
1. Start With Detail
Begin with a detailed drawing to capture the subject fully — but know that this version won’t scale well.
2. Remove Visual Clutter
Simplify the drawing by removing fine details that would get lost at smaller sizes. Focus on the core structures.
3. Refine for Legibility
Regarding the use of type, make sure the design still reads clearly when reduced. Emphasise key shapes and increase stroke weight for clarity.
4. Final Scalable Mark
Repeat the refinement process until you have a bold, scalable mark that holds up beautifully at any size — just be careful not to oversimplify to the point where it becomes generic or unrecognisable.
